2026 BECE School Selection: Do Not Choose Schools Your Academic Strength Cannot Match – Wisdom Hammond Warns

As we prepare for the 2026 Senior High School choice and selection phase, candidates of the just-ended BECE are strongly advised against choosing schools that do not align with their actual academic strengths.

2026 School Choice and Selection: Choose Schools Based on Your Academic Strength—Candidates and Parents Told

This urgent advice comes from Mr. Wisdom Hammond, Team Leader at Education-News Consult, to all students, parents, and guardians across the country.

Too often, candidates and parents fall into the trap of believing they will automatically be placed in a highly oversubscribed category A school, even when they know the candidate’s chance of securing a place on pure merit is near zero.

Parents and their wards need to know that it is not compulsory to choose a category A school and that Category A schools do not always perform better than the others in, say, the B category during the WASSCE.

This process is designed to help parents and candidates accurately measure realistic raw scores and mock test aggregates, using that data to make highly informed choices. Sadly, many families still make poor decisions driven by pride, leading to catastrophic placement failures.

Critical Warning: It is a recipe for disaster for parents to select schools for their wards based strictly on personal taste, prestige, or social preferences. To make the right choices, go here: “Match SHS Data with Science via the SHS CHOICES Portal & Stop Guessing”

Crucial Strategy Adjustments for the 2026 Selection Cycle

1. Master the new “Two Category A Schools” mandate

Under the latest GES placement reforms, every candidate is now required to select a total of eight (8) schools, an increase from previous years. Within these choices, it is now mandatory to select two (2) Category A schools. However, there is a strategic catch: you must choose one boarding school and one day school located within your local district or vicinity.

If a student’s performance is average, do not waste your competitive slots. Ensure that your day option in Category A is a practical school near your residence to avoid severe commuting issues later.

2. Do not overestimate mock raw scores

A high-performing candidate who consistently averages a raw score of 380 or above in standard mock examinations can confidently attempt a highly competitive Category A boarding option as their first choice. However, if your mock scores are not hitting these numbers, do not force your ward into an intense merit pool where they will easily be displaced by higher-scoring candidates nationwide.

3. Shift your focus to Category B and C early

If a candidate’s continuous assessment raw score trends between 320 and 350, you must be extremely strategic. Category B schools are exceptionally competitive and operate strictly on a merit basis. For average students, our strong professional advice is to start anchoring the core of your selection form within Category B and Category C options.

4. Protect below-average students from the self-placement trap

For candidates who struggle to hit consistent marks or find themselves scoring a raw aggregate of 319 or below, save yourself and your parents the intense stress of being left unplaced. To avoid the dreaded self-placement system, look at selecting just one realistic school from Category B, dedicating four choices to reliable Category C schools, and selecting your mandatory options from Category D.

5. Stop following peer pressure

Candidates must stop following friends blindly. Do not select a specific institution simply because your classmates are choosing it. Ask yourself honestly: Based on my actual academic track record, do I realistically have the grades to secure a spot on merit?

6. Every slot matters—including your 7th and 8th choices

No candidate should make the mistake of filling out their final options carelessly. Because the placement system searches all choices, a student can be placed in any of the eight schools submitted. If you enter a school you completely dislike into your 7th or 8th slot, you will be forced to attend, as the Ministry of Education does not permit changes once a match is locked by the software.

7. Factor in the intense boarding shortage

Finally, parents and candidates must recognize that competition for boarding space is fierce. If a school runs short on boarding cubicles, the system automatically gives priority to qualified candidates who opted for the “Day” residency option—even if their raw scores are slightly lower than a competing boarding applicant. Whenever possible, prioritize schools within your catchment area as day students to guarantee a smooth placement.

These suggestions are based on over 15 years of hands-on experience guiding Ghanaian BECE candidates into preferred, right-fit secondary schools. Your decision to rely on or disregard this advice is a choice you personally make—and one for which your ward’s academic future will be liable.
