MoE asked to review ‘controversial’ BECE timetable policy as the 2022 BECE draws nearer. Read the full details of the call by CCT-GH.

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers of Ghana (CCTG) has petitioned the Ministry of Education (MoE) to review the BECE timetable policy that requires BECE candidates to sit two subject papers each day during the examination.

The Coalition in a statement shared to AcademicWeek raised concerns that the nine subject papers to be written by the final year Junior High School students within a period of five days (Monday to Friday) is unfair, hence a need for review.

“BECE seeks to assess students for an eleven-year basic education they have gone through. Unlike Senior High Schools students who take about eight weeks to write their final examination with the aid of scientific calculators

BECE candidates as young as they are, are made to write their examinations with stress and difficulty, not getting enough time to revise,” the statement signed by Communications Director of CCTG Adokwei Ayikwei-Awulley stated.

Scheduled to be conducted on Monday, October 17, 2022, the 32nd edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School will end on Friday, October 21, 2022, with French (Essay and Objective).

A total of over 500,000 prospective BECE candidates from more than 18,000 public and private Junior High Schools (JHSs) across the country are expected to participate in the national examination to be administered at 2,158 centres.

In another story, the Ghana Education Service has said says it will cancel the BECE results of unqualified but registered candidates who will participate in the impending examination for final-year Junior High School students only.

In a statement copied to AcademicWeek, the management of the Education Service cautioned public school heads to desist from registering private school students or individuals not qualified to write the BECE for School examination.

“Registration of candidates for the BECE for school candidates is strictly for students in Junior High School (JHS) Three only. The second-year Junior High School students are ineligible to register and write the BECE School,” the GES stated.

It added “It has come to the attention of GES that some public basic school heads are registering unqualified students for 2022 BECE which is illegal. Anyone found to have registered illegally will have his/her BECE results nullified.
