The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has descended on President Nana Addo for his government’s intention to increase the rate of VAT.

Ablakwa expressed disbelief at the fact that the same Nana Addo who led a demonstration, popularly referred to as the Kumi Preko demonstration, against VAT during the erstwhile Rawlings administration, is the same person who wants to increase VAT By 2.5 %.

“Who could ever have imagined or predicted that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who led the fatal 1995 Kumepreko demonstration against the introduction of VAT under President Rawlings which tragically claimed the lives of Ahunu Ahonga & 5 others would today be increasing VAT by 2.5%”, he wrote on his wall.

Earlier yesterday, Ken Ofori Atta, had announced that the government will increase the VAT rates.

He made this statement while presenting the 2023 Budget Statement at Parliament.

According to him, this is a strategy government developed to increase domestic revenue mobilization.

Also, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, has announced that the government intends to review the e-levy policy. He specifically stated that the rate charged as e-levy will be reduced from 1.5 percent to 1 percent.

According to him, this is part of the effort of the government of Ghana to increase the domestic revenue mobilization target the government.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta also explained that the daily threshold criteria for the payment of the e-levy will be reviewed. That is, the GHc 100 cedi threshold which was initially communicated will be reviewed by the government.
