Bawumia ’s promise to cancel e-levy is a lie – Hopeson Adorye
In a striking revelation, Hopeson Adorye, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has labeled Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ’s commitment to abolish the electronic levy (E-Levy) as dishonest.
During an interview with Atinka TV, Hopeson Adorye urged Ghanaians to be wary of Bawumia ‘s promises, claiming they are mere tactics to win votes.
His assertions cast doubt on the feasibility of the pledge made by Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, to eliminate the E-Levy if he secures the presidency in the upcoming elections.
Hopeson Adorye highlighted the intricate connection between the E-Levy, among other tax measures, and the financial agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He pointed out that these taxes were integral to securing a three-year bailout deal with the IMF, spanning from 2024 to 2026, which has already facilitated the release of US$1.2 billion in two segments.
“The promise by Bawumia to cancel the E-Levy is a lie. He is lying and will use it to delude Ghanaians, get their votes, and abandon the promise,” Hopeson Adorye asserted, emphasizing the critical role these taxes played in the nation’s financial strategy.
Hopeson Adorye ’s critique comes at a time when the E-Levy, introduced in May 2022 as a measure to boost domestic revenue mobilization, faces widespread scrutiny. Originally set at 1.5%, the tax was subsequently adjusted to 1% following public backlash, yet it remains a contentious issue among Ghanaians.

Bawumia ’s promise in early February 2024 to repeal the E-Levy and three other taxes instituted by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration has rekindled debates on fiscal policy and governance ahead of the elections.
With the backdrop of these fiscal commitments to the IMF, Hopeson Adorye questioned the practicality of Bawumia’s pledge. “All taxes he has promised to repeal are all lies.
Go and fetch the IMF agreement; these taxes were used as collateral, they can never touch it,” he argued, suggesting that the promises were not grounded in the reality of Ghana’s economic commitments.
The controversy sheds light on the complexities of political promises, particularly those involving fiscal policy changes that could impact international financial agreements.
As the electoral campaign heats up, the discussion around the E-Levy and its future under potential leadership changes remains a focal point of public and political discourse.
Hopeson Adorye ’s comments serve as a cautionary note to voters, urging them to critically evaluate the feasibility and implications of electoral promises, especially those with far-reaching economic ramifications.
