BECE Examination Malpractices: Don’t treat 12 arrested teachers with kid gloves- Prof. Agyekum to Police

Day one of the 2021 BECE saw the arrest of some 12 teachers for various examination malpractice offenses nationwide. Dean of the School of Performing Arts and Linguistics Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum has been speaking on the issue and has called on the Ghana police, WAEC, and the police to apply the law to the letter on all the 12 teachers in connection with examination malpractices.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrooko Show monitored by Ghanaeducation.org, Professor Kofi Agyekum said, teachers are expected to set good examples for their students if examination malpractice will be dealt with in our pre-tertiary examinations at the BECE and WASSCE.
The twelve arrested educators included 11 teachers and a headteacher. All the arrested teachers were picked at two examination centres in the Offinso Municipality in the Ashanti Region and the Senase R/C Basic School in Berekum in the Bono Region.
Prof. Agyekum could not fathom why the teachers would misconduct themselves when they are supposed to set a good example to the students. He also sought to find out why people aren’t afraid of engaging in examination malpractices.
”Every year, examination malpractices happen. What punishment is meted out to people which they are not frightened about? What are we doing about their arrest? The law must take its course. Even when the Police are done with their investigations, the Ghana Education Service also has theirs to do,” he said on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”.

He added that these teachers have disgraced the chalk fraternity for failing themselves and the profession. Prof further called on the police to ensure the suspect’s dance to the laws saying ”we should not treat this with kid gloves or else we will be breeding future thieves who will ruin this nation . . . So, let’s deal with these people”.
