Birim Central GES unveils reading and spelling competition

Reading has become an important means of understanding text, exploring the world of knowledge and entertainment. To imbibe in children the habit of reading for new knowledge and fun, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Birim Central Municipality has started a reading and spelling contest.

Why the Birim Central GES reading and spelling competition

The contest aims at helping students to improve their cognitive skills. The new but successful event needs to be supported to help regularise it.

The week-long exercise has received support from the Ghana Library Authority. The Birim Central Municipality reading and spelling contest has four circuits covering six public schools contesting at the lower and upper primary as well as the Junior High School level.

According to Mr. Benjamin Cudjoe, the Birim Central Municipal Director of GES, the reading and spelling contest aims at helping children to master and improve on their pronunciation, develop their smart thinking and analytical skills, and also their self-confidence which will all help them scale up their performance in school. 

According to him, the Birim Central Municipal Directorate of the GES intends to make the event a regular one. He called on government and private institutions to support their efforts to make the periodic contest possible. The programme is further expected to be expanded to include private schools in the municipality.

The Ghana Library Authority hopes to continue to support the reading and spelling competition to promote literacy and to disseminate useful information to ensure they experience lifelong learning”  Mr. George Osarfo, Officer-in-charge of the Ghana Library Authority in Akim Oda, said.

The Contesting Schools

At the event held at Akim Oda Circuit ‘C’ the schools featured were St. Anthony Basic School, Salvation Army Basic School, SDA Basic School, Ridge Experimental Basic School, Essam Basic School, and St. Luke Primary School.

At both lower and upper primary, St. Anthony Basic School emerged first with 26 points and 41 points respectively, while Ridge Experimental Basic School came first with 54 points for the JHS level.

Ms. Lordina Appaigyaa, a class six pupil of St. Anthony Basic School, expressed enthusiasm about the contest and wished it was held every day.
