Christian Atsu’s Football Journey: From Gomoa Fetteh To Newcastle And Chelsea
Christian Atsu spent the majority of his career playing in Europe’s top-division leagues.
His career took off after Porto discovered him while he was playing for the former Feyenoord, now known as the West Africa Football Academy (WAFA).
Atsu was signed by Porto in 2009 at the age of 17, and it didn’t take long for them to invite him to join their first team.
His incredible skill set made it difficult to let him go. However, he did spend a season on loan at Rio Ave, where he had a significant impact right away and ultimately earned a spot in the Porto senior team upon his return.
Atsu grasped it with both hands as he approached his career’s breakthrough moment.
When he returned to the 2012–2013 UEFA Europa League champions Chelsea at the end of the campaign, manager Jose Mourinho then demanded his service.
Atsu, however, went four years without kicking a ball for the London-based club. Before receiving regular playing time with Newcastle United, another English club, he was offered a number of loans.
Atsu played on loan for four different teams while under contract to Chelsea, except the Magpies.
When Atsu struggled to make it at Chelsea, he found success with Vittese, Everton, Bournemouth, and Malaga.
He played 121 times and contributed to 10 goals during his first season on loan before joining Newcastle in 2017.
Atsu played 64 times for the Black Stars, contributing nine assists and 10 goals.
He was a key member of Ghana’s AFCON teams in 2015 and 2017, which placed second and fourth, respectively.
For his goal against Guinea in the 2015 AFCON quarterfinals, he received the best goal award. He was also recognized as the top competitor.
