Director-General of Ghana Education Service Fired? Facts and Details of this story are still scanty.
Information available to the Ghana Education News portal is that Dr. Erick Nkansah, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has been fired.
This follows the coming in of the new education minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. The news was broken this morning on the JoyNews AM Show monitored by this portal in the early hours of Monday, 27th January, 2025. Another from 3News (TV3) confirmed the report.
The newly appointed Director of Education, according to another source close to this new portal, is Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, the Provost of the College of Education at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
The possibility of public institutional leaders being fired by new governments in Ghana is not known. One of the reasons for the usual firing of political appointees handed institutional leadership roles is to ensure that the new government has officers who believe in the policies of the new government. Newly appointed institutional leaders are put in leadership roles to help ensure the policies of the new government are upheld and implemented.
However, the structural progression of staff from the lower level to the higher levels must be embraced and the political appointments of persons into such key positions are halted so that people will have the confidence that they can rise from the lower to the higher positions and become the Director-General to motivate them to work and progress.
There is the need for institutional progression at the Ghana Education Service and the government must ensure that persons appointed to the position of Director-General of the GES and other state institutions are individuals who have progressed through the ranks in the service.
The current practice, which is the appointment of politicians to head such institutions, is that people will be fired any time there is a change in government.
The Ghana Education News portal is working behind the scenes to get a reliable confirmation as to whether Dr. Erick Nkansah, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has been fired.
