Education expert cautions over growing political influence in schools

Concerns has been raised by the founder and director of Young Executive School (YES) in Kasoa, Rev. Dr. Nana Kwesi Essel-Okyeahene, and Onua Francis International School, about the increasing spread of partisan politics into the educational institutions in Ghana.

‎As a result, he warned that such trend affects the development of students and the integrity of the learning environment in the country.

‎Rev. Dr. Essel-Okyeahene, who is an ordained reverend and traditional leader (Gyaasehene of Gomoa Wassa), highligted that campuses which was previously seen as neutral grounds for intellectual growth and character formation are slowly turning into arenas for political rivalry and influence.

‎During the time he was speaking on the surge in political activities across  colleges of education, universities, nursing training colleges, he warned that this is resulting in a shift risks misleading the main purpose of education.

‎He also drew to attention that immediate and significant exposure to partisan politics could disrupt students from focusing on their academic and professional goals. Instead of the students to dedicate time to building competence, critical thinking, and discipline, they are rather engaging themselves in political recognition, financial incentives, and social visibility.

‎A warning was given by Rev. Dr. Essel-Okyeahene that  these trends might have enduring consequences on the nation and this is because graduates may start working without sufficient understanding, skills, and ethical grounding which will be needed to promote sustainable development.
