Felicia Abban, Dr.Kwame Nkrumah’s Photographer
Felicia Abban was the official photographer for the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and doubles as the first female professional photographer in Ghana.
Felicia Abban was born and nurtured at Takoradi in the year 1935. Abban started his basic education in Takoradi in the Western region of Ghana.
Felicia Abban married to Robert Abban,the man who designed the fabric of which had Dr. Nkrumah image on flowers with Ghana flag during the 1957 independence Day celebration.
After their marriage, they relocated to Jamestown a suburb of Accra for their creative works.
Felicia Abban started learning art of photography from her father’s studio at the age of fourteen (14). The studio was located at James town near J. K Vanderpujes and James Banner studio.
Felicia the first female photographer in her early days work with Guinea Press Limited as a stringer. This Guinea Press Limited was owned by the Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP).
With the passion for arts, Felicia Abban kept the studio close to her heart and work tiressly to promote the good image of the company.
Her official photography journey spanned for five decades with a lot of recognitions from Ghana and abroad. She also earned a lot of respect and honour to work as the official photographer for Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. She played a significant and spectacular role in documenting Ghana’s transformation.
She is widely known for her self-portraits, especially the ones she took before an event as a way to promote her business.
She bacame popular in the 1950s, with support from Nkrumah, Felicia Abban was able to set up her own studio to offer services to her cherish customers and also trained young people who have passion for photography and arts.
She also served as the role model to many women who taught the art of photography is only meant for men.
Felicia Abban vibrant photographs were featured in 12th edition of Bomako Encounter in the year 2019.
First public display of her arts was curated by Nana Oforiatta Ayim and staged at ANO’s gallery in March 2017 and the gallery has plans of transforming her studio into a museum in her honour.
Abban saddly had to retire due to worsening arthritics.
Felicia Abban is among the prominent Ghanaian women who have played a significant role in promoting the good name of the country.
