Functions of the Electoral Commission of Ghana

The Electoral Commission is an independent body established by the constitution to conduct and supervise free and fair elections in a country.
The commission according to the 1992 Constitution of Ghana , shall have a chairperson, two deputy chairperson and four others. The members of the commission are to be appointed by the president under the article 70 of the 1992constitution. Members of the commission are independent, neutral and non partisan.

Functions of the ElectoralCommission
1.Compilation of Electoral Register
The Electoral Commission has a duty to compile the Register of voters for all citizens who are 18 years or older and fulfill the requirement of voting and registered for public Elections. The commission ensures that qualified people are not deliberately disenfranchise.
The commission also ensures that a credible register is provided for the conduct of elections.
2.Creation of constituencies
The Electoral Commission is mandated to demarcate the electoral boundaries of the country into constituencies for national elections. In the delimitation of electoral constituencies, the commission takes into consideration several factors including administrative convenience, geographical factors and population of the people in that geographical area.
3.Education
Another function of the Electoral Commission is to educate the citizenry on issues about elections. It is the function of the commission to educate people on the need to exercise their franchise.
The commission is expected to communicate voting day and voting centres and how citizens should vote without spoiling the ballot.
4.Training
The commission is also responsible for appointing and trade training auxiliary staff needed for election elections.
The commission appoints and train presiding officers and pooling station agent for the conduct of elections
5.Conducting and supervising of public elections
The Electoral Commission supervie and conduct public elections in the country. It fixes date for the conduct of elections and takes measures to ensure that all elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.
In this regard, Article 45 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana mandate the commission to conduct and supervise free and fair elections in the country.
