GRIDCO and ECG Announce Power Restoration Across Ghana Following Gas Supply Resumption
In a joint statement, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have conveyed the welcome news of the full restoration of power across the entire country. This development comes on the heels of a temporary power outage that affected several areas on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
The outage, as reported by GRIDCO, was primarily attributed to challenges stemming from limited gas supply in Tema, which significantly impacted power generation. GRIDCo had issued a statement on October 26, explaining that the constrained gas supply situation would result in a supply gap of 550MW during peak hours, leading to disruptions in power distribution across the country.
However, in a recent joint statement by GRIDCO and ECG, the good news was shared with the public: “The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) and ECG wish to inform the public that power supply has been restored to all affected customers, following the resumption of gas supply from Takoradi for use by generating plants in Tema. The improved gas supply has enabled power restoration to all loads across the country.”

GRIDCO and ECG expressed their apologies for any inconveniences that customers may have faced during the power outage. Additionally, customers with localized power faults were encouraged to contact a dedicated helpline for prompt resolution.
The recent power disruption had raised concerns, with some referring to it as “dumsor,” a term commonly used to describe irregular and unannounced power outages. The lack of a formal timetable for affected areas and the duration of the outage had added to the uncertainties faced by consumers.
With the swift resolution of the gas supply issue and the complete restoration of power, GRIDCO and ECG have taken a proactive step towards ensuring that Ghanaians can enjoy reliable and consistent electricity access. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of a robust and diversified energy supply system to prevent such disruptions in the future. It also highlights the commitment of these organizations to addressing challenges promptly and upholding the well-being of the nation.
