There are harmful side effects of having small sleep hours. Lack of sleep can decrease sex desire, deteriorate the immune system, impair thinking, and induce weight gain.
You run a higher chance of developing some diseases, diabetes, and even vehicle accidents when you don’t get enough sleep.
You’re not the only person who falls into this category of people who don’t sleep. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), almost 1 in 3 persons in America don’t get enough sleep.
Here are the details of what happens to your body when you don’t log enough hours under the covers.

- You may get sick
Losing sleep might make it harder for your body to fight off disease. This makes becoming sick simpler.
Even a reciprocal association between sleep and your immune system was discovered by researchers. If you get sick and don’t get enough rest, you can lose more sleep as your body battles an infection.
- Your heart may suffer
An investigation published in the European Heart Journal found that both short sleep durations (less than 5 hours per night) and long sleep durations (9 or more hours per night) have a detrimental effect on heart health.
Less sleep significantly raises your risk of developing coronary heart disease and having a stroke, in particular.
- Your cancer risk increases
According to the AASM’s sleep statement, less sleep is linked to greater rates of breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer.
The majority of this burden might fall on night shift workers. The good news is that the group’s death rates were best among men and women who slept 7 hours or more every night.

In one study, testosterone levels in young men who slept fewer hours over a one-week period fell. Sex hormone levels were lowered by up to 15% when sleeping 5 hours or less.
The men also claimed that each night of disrupted sleep caused their general mood and vitality to deteriorate.
- You gain weight
Getting too little sleep can make you gain weight.
In a study, 21,469 adults over the age of 20 had their weight and sleep patterns analyzed. Over the course of the three-year trial, those who slept for fewer than 5 hours a night were more likely to put on weight and eventually develop obesity.
On the scale, people who slept for between 7 and 8 hours performed better.
- Your risk of getting diabetes increases
People who don’t get enough sleep (or who get too much) have a higher risk of developing adult-onset diabetes in addition to having a larger waistline.
Researchers looked at 10 different research that looked at sleep and diabetes. Their research showed that 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night is the recommended amount to prevent insulin problems that could cause diabetes.
- You’re accident prone
According to the National Sleep Foundation, getting six hours or less of sleep each night increases your risk of being in an automobile accident by three times.
Shift workers, truck drivers, business travelers, and anyone else who works long or irregular hours are the most vulnerable. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, think twice before driving.

- Your skin suffers
If all of these health hazards aren’t enough to get you to sleep more, do it for your appearance.
In one study, the skin health and sleep patterns of a group of participants between the ages of 30 and 50 were assessed. The findings showed that those who slept insufficiently had more fine lines, wrinkles, skin that was noticeably looser, and uneven skin tone.
In addition, the bad sleepers felt worse about how they looked than their well-rested peers.
