Historic John Mahama sworn in 3 times under the 4th republic as president
The president of Ghana has today set a new record as the only president under the 4th Republic to have been sworn in as president of Ghana 3 times. The framers of the Constitution did not ever imagine a day and moment like this in the life of the country, but the history-making John Mahama lived and made history with it.
How did John Mahama end up being sworn in 3 times under the 4th Republic as president?
It all began in 2012 following the sad demise of Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills. His death created a vacuum, and John Mahama, who was then the vice president, was sworn in as president of Ghana.
John Mahama led the NDC to victory in the 2012 elections that same year and served his first term. He was sworn in on 7th January 2013. However, he lost the 2016 presidential election to the then-incoming president, Nana Akufo-Addo, and also lost in 2020 to Nana Akufo-Addo again. His losses led to the belief by the opposition that they were on the verge of retiring him through the 2024 election.
However, John Mahama and the NDC rose to the occasion to win the 2024 election in a way that has never been experienced or imagined in Ghana.
On 7th January 2025, John Mahama was sworn in for the third time, which makes it a rare historic feat in Ghana. No president in Ghana under the 4th Republic has been sworn in 3 times. President Akufo-Addo and former president John Agyekum Kufuor, for instance, served two terms and exited the scene, but Mahama remains the only person to have had this third experience.
