If you are a student of the University of Ghana offering any of these three programmes in the University of Ghana(a full fee-paying programme, a programme at the Accra City Campus or a Distance Education Programme), then this article is for you. Any student in this category has their name included in the list of students whose fees have been reduced.
The Parliament of Ghana, through the Education Committee of Parliament, “directed” the University to discount the fees of the above-mentioned student. The University has accordingly heeded to this directive. In a recent release, the University management gave some background information about this issue. The release read,
“Ahead of the start of the 2022/2023 Academic Year, the University of Ghana made adjustments to the Academic User Facility Fees based on rates approved by Parliament and communicated through the Ghana Tertiary Education Committee (GTEC).
Claims that the University was charging illegal fees were proven to be untrue. The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education at a meeting convened on February 9, 2023, with representatives from the UG management and UG student leaders, the National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Ministry of Education, to deliberate on the matter, established that UG had indeed complied with the Fees and Charges Act, 2022 (Act 1080), by charging the approved 15% increase of fees over the dees approved by Parliament.
The University has since received formal communication from the Parliamentary Select Committee confirming that the UG fees for the 2022/2023 academic year are legal and based on the level of fees approved by Parliament.
The Parliamentary Select Committee appealed to UG to consider offering a discount on fees for the current academic year to lessen the burden on students, in view of the current economic challenges facing the country. In response to the appeal by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, the University Council approved a one-time discount of 2% on the 15% fee increase approved by Parliament for the 2022/2023 academic year, for the following Programmes:
a. Full fee paying programmes
b. Programmes at the Accra City Campus
c. Distance Education Programmes
The discount has been applied to the account of the affected students.
