In a surprising turn of events, imprisoned Russian nationalist Girkin Igor, also known as Igor Strelkov, has expressed his intention to run for president in the March 2024 election. Girkin, currently in custody for inciting extremism, has been a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin’s handling of the war in Ukraine, warning of potential revolution and civil war. Despite his legal troubles, Girkin’s supporters, led by Oleg Nelzin, announced his presidential aspirations based on a letter from Girkin.

In August, Girkin asserted that he would be a better president than Putin, citing the Kremlin chief’s alleged leniency towards security and military leaders.
