Media General Faces Backlash Over Bawumia Cartoon
Media General, the parent company of TV3 and its associated networks, finds itself in turbulent waters following the publication of a controversial cartoon depicting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a Muslim by day and a Christian by night. The cartoon, widely criticized for promoting religious bigotry and intolerance, has ignited a storm of public outrage and professional scrutiny.
The depiction in the cartoon mirrored earlier remarks made by MP Sam Nartey George, who accused Dr. Bawumia of being confused about his faith. However, Media General faced substantial backlash for what the public deemed unprofessional conduct and concerns about escalating religious tensions.
In response to the uproar, Media General promptly removed the cartoon from its social media platforms and issued a formal apology to Dr. Bawumia’s Communications Head, Nana Akomea, on November 15, 2023. Despite this, there are persistent calls for a broader apology to the public for allegedly contributing to the propagation of religious bigotry.

The controversy has escalated further as the National Democratic Congress (NPP) plans to file a complaint with the National Media Commission. Their complaint alleges that Media General has consistently promoted hate against them without valid reasons. This move signals the potential involvement of regulatory bodies in scrutinizing the media company’s practices.
As the fallout continues, the incident raises important questions about media ethics and the responsibility of media outlets to avoid contributing to social and religious tensions. It remains to be seen how Media General will address the ongoing concerns and whether this incident will prompt a broader discussion on religious tolerance and responsible journalism in the Ghanaian media landscape. The unfolding events may serve as a catalyst for a more comprehensive examination of the delicate balance between freedom of expression and ethical reporting.
