National Tobacco Control Strategy out doored
Ghana Takes Bold Stride Towards a Tobacco-Free Future with National Tobacco Control Strategy Launch.
In a monumental move towards a healthier and tobacco-free nation, the Ministry of Health has officially launched the National Tobacco Control Strategy (NTCS) under the auspices of the Food and Drugs Authority. This strategic initiative represents Ghana’s unwavering commitment to global tobacco control efforts and aligns with key international frameworks, including the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC).
The National Tobacco Control Strategy is not merely a document; it is a comprehensive roadmap that integrates the provisions of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851), the Tobacco Control Regulations 2016 (L.I 2247), and other relevant laws. By adopting a systematic approach, the NTCS aims to expedite tobacco control in Ghana, with a special emphasis on shielding present and future generations from the multifaceted consequences of tobacco use and exposure.

Youth and low-income communities are prioritized within the NTCS, emphasizing community engagement and policy implementation to fortify the battle against tobacco. The strategy sets forth clear goals, strategic timelines, and a structured framework for collaboration among various agencies involved in tobacco control.
The launch of the National Tobacco Control Strategy signifies a pivotal moment in Ghana’s dedication to mitigating the adverse effects of tobacco on public health and the economy. The collective commitment from diverse institutions, experts, and civil society members underscores the strategy’s robustness and its capability to address the dynamic challenges posed by tobacco use.
In tandem with the NTCS launch, the Food and Drugs Authority conducted a two-day training on the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. Dr. Olivia Agyekumwaa Boateng, Director of the Tobacco and Substances of Abuse Directorate during the National Tobacco Control Strategy, highlighted the global challenge posed by the tobacco menace and underscored the exacerbation caused by illicit trade. The training not only addresses strategies to counter illicit trade but also establishes a framework for enhancing law enforcement and fostering international collaboration.
As Ghana takes these decisive steps, it sends a powerful message – the nation stands united in its resolve to build a healthier future by curbing tobacco use and eradicating the illicit trade that perpetuates its harms.
