National Service Personnel (NSP) posted to the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for the 2020/2021 academic year, have been urged to be responsible and to resist any forms of harassment at the workplace.
They were also advised to stay focused to earn the needed experiences in their service period, follow their dreams, and to face life better equipped.
The admonition was given on Monday, 23rd November, 2020, during an orientation programme by the Division of Human Resource (DHR) at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, Winneba to introduce service personnel to the workings of the University.
The Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq., in his welcome address, emphasised that national service is a call to national duty on every University graduate to demonstrate appreciation for investments the state made in them.
“At the workplace, what you want to be is a good worker who is very circumspect. You don’t normally consider your grade or your class but you look at your persona. You look at how you combine the various factors of production to make a meaningful life for yourself.

“University education is universal education. It makes you a utility player wherever you are; you should be able to function and fit into every system and when that happens, you begin to see what the future holds for you,” he stated.
Surv. Osei-Barima Esq. charged them to dedicate themselves to the service of the state. “As national service personnel, please never allow yourself to be used by anybody for their personal interest. Stay focused, do your national service, when you complete and you want to further your education, pursue it. If you want to get a job immediately after your service, work hard and get employed.”
The Deputy Registrar, DHR, Mrs. Deborah Afful, also admonished service personnel to seize the opportunities UEW had offered them to attain greater heights in life during and after their service.
“But much depends on you. From today, ensure that the path you want to chart will lead you in attaining your doctorate degrees. You can start from the Department where you find yourself. Look at the things going on; look for a researchable topic. My wish for you is not to work but to go and do your Master’s. In six years, I would be glad to find you at any university in Ghana or abroad wearing a red mortarboard. This is my wish for you,” she said.
The Senior Assistant Registrar in Charge of Junior/Senior Staff, DHR, Mr. Charles Denkyi, who presented on the topic: the role of NSP in UEW, entreated attendees to promote the good name of the UEW at all times, assist in safeguarding office property and resources not engage in any activity to tarnish the name of the University.
The Head, Department of Employee Relations, DHR, Ms. Patricia Kaitoo spoke on settling in for work at UEW and implored the service personnel to be punctual and regular at work. She encouraged them to exhibit maturity, be proud of the job they would be assigned to, use the time and resources judiciously, have healthy interpersonal relationships and be professional at what they do at all times.
