Sacked DCE Involved In Accident

Barikisu Losina, the recently removed District Chief Executive (DCE) of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, was reportedly involved in an accident near Guripe on the Sawla-Damongo road last Saturday. She was accompanied by her child and a driver during the incident. The specific cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

Following the accident, Barikisu Losina, along with the other passengers, is currently undergoing treatment at St. Anne’s Hospital in Damongo.

President Akufo-Addo recently took action by dismissing 24 district chief executives (DCEs), as outlined in a letter dated February 2, 2024. The decision, grounded in constitutional provisions such as Article 243 (3) (b) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936), was communicated to the affected officials.

The letter, signed by President Akufo-Addo, indicated the revocation of the appointments without specifying the reasons for the dismissals. It simply stated, “I write to inform you that I have revoked the appointments of the following persons as District Chief Executives.”

A subsequent letter dated February 3, 2024, introduced new nominees to fill the resulting vacancies. Interestingly, there has been speculation in political circles suggesting that some of the dismissed DCEs might have contravened a directive issued by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This directive urged metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives not to challenge sitting members of Parliament during the parliamentary primaries and to refrain from openly supporting candidates.

Notably, some of the dismissed officials were in areas where the NPP does not currently have sitting MPs.

To address the vacated positions, President Akufo-Addo announced a new set of nominees, including Prince Dormaa Amoah, Oscar Asare Andoh, and others. The political landscape is expected to be influenced by these changes, especially in the lead-up to the parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

This shipment of 1874 looted artifacts has reached Ghana on a United Airlines flight, featuring notable items like a ceremonial cap used during coronations. This collection, originally taken during the third Anglo-Asante War, will be formally handed over to Asantehene Osei Tutu II during the 150th-anniversary commemoration at Dwaberem, Manhyia Palace, on February 8.

A delegation, led by Dr. Silvia Forni of the Fowler Museum at the University of California, includes Dr. Rachel Raynor and Dr. Erica Jones, responsible for Registration and Collections and the Africa Department Curator, respectively. Professor Kwesi Ampene from Tufts University also accompanies the team.

Acquired by the Fowler Museum in 1965 from the Wellcome Trust, the objects received permission to leave California under their CITIES PERMIT in December. Discussions between the Fowler Museum and Manhyia Palace had been ongoing for years, with Dr. Erica Jones visiting and meeting with Asantehene last year.

The decision for permanent return arises partly due to changes in legislation at the University, allowing the return of all looted items. Historian Ivor Agyeman-Duah confirmed this development, highlighting a new cultural cooperation framework involving the Fowler Museum, the University of California, Manhyia Palace Museum, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The returned objects, dating before Asantehene Kofi Karkari in the 1840s, include an ornamental chair, large beads, a strand of seed or bug-shaped beads, gold jewelry, a royal stool ornament, a royal necklace, and another royal stool ornament. This marks a significant step in rectifying historical cultural losses and fostering ongoing collaboration in preserving cultural heritage.

An earthquake of 5.1 has hit Oklahoma. The earthquake, which measured 5.1, occurred on 2024-02-03 at 05:24:28 (UTC). The epic center was located at 35.534°N 96.764°W while the depth of the quake was 3.0 km. The earthquake’s epicenter is just 50 miles to the east of Oklahoma City.

The earthquake’s rating would tie it for the fourth largest rating in state history.

While streaming a rainstorm, Twitter/X user @lonelyfencepost initially mistook the earthquake for thunder. Footage from their account captures the moment the room starts to shake.

There were no immediate reports of damage in the first hours after the quake, but the USGS warned that the threat of aftershocks would continue for some time. So far, seismometers have registered an additional six quakes greater than 2.5 magnitude in the hours since the original quake; the largest being a 3.4 as of Friday morning.

A series of earthquakes rattled the Oklahoma City metro less than a month ago, with the most significant being a magnitude 4.4.

Based on initial estimates, Friday’s quake ranked among the top four greatest events to impact the Sooner State since 1900.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked the state in 2016 caused moderate damage in north-central Oklahoma, and studies tied the event to wastewater injection from oil and gas production.

Carl Weathers, who came to fame as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies and proceeded to appear in dozens of movies and TV shows from “Predator” to “The Mandalorian,” has died, according to his manager Matt Luber. Weathers was 76.

The actor “died peacefully at home” on Thursday, Luber told CNN. No cause of death was available.

“Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” his family said in a statement provided to CNN. “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.

Weathers was actually a former football player who had never boxed when he auditioned for the role in “Rocky,” proceeding to appear as Apollo Creed in the Oscar-winning film and the next three sequels.

In a 2015 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Weathers recalled auditioning with Sylvester Stallone, who he was told was the film’s writer, not knowing that Stallone was also the star. Afterwards, feeling the reading hadn’t gone well, he recalled, “I just blurted out, ‘I could do a lot better if you got me a real actor to work with.’”

The character was obviously inspired by Muhammad Ali, who Weathers later met.
He later parlayed his “Rocky” exposure into a number of other roles that capitalized on his imposing physicality, including the 1987 sci-fi action movie “Predator,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Upon learning of Weathers’ death, his “Mandalorian” costar Pedro Pascal simply wrote “words fail” alongside a broken heart emoji in the caption next to a photo of the fallen star on Instagram.

Weathers’ “Predator” costar Schwarzenegger said on Instagram that they “couldn’t have made” the movie without him, “and we certainly wouldn’t have had such a wonderful time making it.”

“Every minute with him – on set and off – was pure joy,” the former California governor added. “He was the type of friend who pushes you to be your best just to keep up with him.”

Sandler also posted in honor of Weathers on Instagram, writing alongside a gallery of images that he was “a true great man.”

“Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete. So much fun to be around always,” he wrote, adding later, “My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him.”

Stallone, meanwhile, said he was “torn up” by the loss of Weathers, whom he called “an integral part of my life” and “my success.”

“I never could have accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him,” he said in a video posted to Instagram. “He was absolutely brilliant — his voice, his size, his power, his athletic ability. But more importantly his heart, his soul.”

Stallone spoke to the camera while standing in front of a painting that depicts a scene they shared in one of the “Rocky” movies. He said it was likely one of the last moments they were ever in the ring together, “and I’ll never forget it.”

“I was so fortunate to be part of his life,” he said.

A letter from the Ghana Cocoa Board, sighted by Ghana Education News on Twitter, shows that Ghana is now buying cocoa from Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria under this government.

The tweet shared the official letter from the Cocoa Board and captioned it.

“Bombshell: Ghana is now buying cocoa from Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria under this government. We are buying 3500 metric tonnes from them in a letter dated January 25, 2024.

However, this administration, under the direction of Dr. Afriyie Akoto, informed us in 2022 that they had doubled our cocoa production.

The letter dated January 25, 2024, with the heading “Re-Importation of Cocoa Beans from Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria” has caused a lot of worry among Ghanaians. The chief executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Hon. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, signed the letter approving the purchase.

A total of 2500 metric tonnes of cocoa are to be procured from Cote d’Ivoire, and another 1000 metric tonnes from Nigeria.
The letter further stipulated that the consignments from both countries should travel by sea and through the Tema port.It was further requested that the suppliers provide the name of the vessel, shipment schedule, and quantity of beans to be imported, and indicate if the shipment will be in bulk or not.

The question on the minds of Ghanaians is what happened to the famous planting for food and jobs policy of the government and why Ghana should import cocoa from these two countries.

However, many have argued that cocoa farms in Ghana have become Galmasey pits, hence the need to import cocoa with approval from the Cocoa Board.

Roads to cocoa-growing areas continue to be underdeveloped, and the dangers posed by Galamsey even make cash crop farms vulnerable in Ghana.

Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are by far the two largest cocoa-growing countries and produce up to 60% of the world’s cocoa, followed by Ecuador with 9% yet Ghana is now important cocoa.
