Pastor drugged to court over $32,084 visa fraud

Pastor visa fraud $32084 defrauding UDS Student Sentenced To Jail Over Fraud

$32,084 visa fraud championed by a pastor has awakened Accra to the realities of some men of God who hid behind the name of God to engage in illegal activities.

In Accra, Ghana – A 47-year-old pastor, Bismark Quaoo Yankey, finds himself trading hymns for headlines after appearing in court accused of defrauding five individuals of a hefty $32,084 and GH₵13,760. The alleged scheme? Promising US visas but delivering nothing but empty promises and a vanishing act.

Yankey, facing five counts of defrauding by false pretences, pleaded not guilty before an Accra Circuit Court. Bail was set at GH₵300,000, with a court date scheduled for January 23, 2024.

The prosecution painted a picture of Yankey preying on hopeful travelers, luring them with the promise of swift US visas for a mere GH₵4,000 and $11,000 each. From businessmen to traders, five individuals fell victim to the pastor’s smooth-talking, allegedly handing over a combined sum of GH₵13,760 and $32,084.

But once the pockets were filled, Yankey reportedly vanished into thin air. Calls went unanswered, meetings cancelled, and the promised visas remained as elusive as a desert mirage. Frustrated and financially drained, the victims finally tracked Yankey down to his church premises, leading to his arrest.

On November 10, 2023, the prosecution stated that the complainants discovered information that the accused person was present in the premises of his church, which led to the arrest of the accused person.

Now, Yankey awaits his fate in court, leaving a trail of broken dreams and unanswered prayers in his wake. This case serves as a stark reminder to be wary of seemingly too-good-to-be-true offers, especially when they come dressed in a religious cloak.

The Pastor visa fraud case is expected to be a test case and a lesson for men of God engaged in such activities.

Make payment of nursing trainee allowances obligatory for every government – Nurse-Midwife Trainees

automatic recruitment

Nurse-midwife trainees have called for the payment of nursing trainee allowances to be obligatory for every government. The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA) made the call at the 31st GNMTA National Delegates Congress in Accra.

The leader of the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA), Pascal Adumbisa, explained while making the request that if the nursing trainee allowance payment is obligatory for every government, it will no longer be a mere campaign promise from politicians.

She also called on the government to improve the poor conditions of student nurses across the country. In her statement, she challenges the government to put measures in place to reduce their burden.

Speaking at the launch of the 31st GNMTA National Delegates Congress in Accra, Mr. Adumbisa stressed the importance of securing these allowances in government policy to ensure consistency across political administrations.

He said, “We would propose that allowances be made a government policy instead of a campaign policy. In that case, no political party can alter it. It should become obligatory for any government that comes to power to do the needful.”

Under the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President John Mahama eliminated the stipend for teachers and nursing trainees in 2014. The nursing trainee allowances, just like the teacher trainee allowance, were to be replaced with student loans, among others, by the NDC government.

To make the necessary investments in educational infrastructure, the government explained that it was necessary to spend the money.

I’ll prosecute corrupt NPP and NDC members from 2025 – Mahama

prosecute corrupt NPP and NDC members Mahama challenges recent WASSCE results

I’ll prosecute corrupt NPP and NDC members from 2025 is the latest promise made by John Dramani Mahama which has shocked many at both ends of the political divide.

Ahead of the 2024 election year and the election in December 2024, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that he will prosecute individuals involved in corruption or corruption-related activities.

According to the former president, the rate of corruption in Ghana today, which is not only unchecked and widespread, has the tendency to destroy the country.

He revealed this during a tour of the Volta Region, which commenced on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from Tegbi, the former President accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of displaying a lack of interest in combating corruption, attributing it to the alleged involvement of party members in corrupt practices.

“So I have said if they [NPP] can’t deal with it when we come, we will deal with it for them. When NDC comes, we will hold those who have misconducted themselves accountable,” Mr Mahama said.

It is via this journey that Mahama will have the opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, particularly those who are fans and sympathizers of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), in a number of different cities and villages in order to gain an understanding of their problems and hopes for a thriving Ghana.

When Mahama addressed the gathering in Tegbi, he issued a warning that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were elected or appointed to public offices would likewise be subject to sanctions for indulging in corrupt acts.

He emphasized his commitment to accountability, stating, “But I must also caution our people that those of us who go into positions of authority if you also abuse your trust, I’m not going to come and defend you. The anti-corruption institutions will deal with you as we are going to deal with members of this [NPP] government,” he said.

Ghana in Talks with IMF to Revamp Debt Portfolio: $5.4 Billion Restructuring on the Table: Professor Steve Hanke

Ghana in Talks with IMF to Revamp Debt Portfolio

A troubling dance is unfolding in Ghana, one that leaves ordinary citizens twirling with anxiety. Today, as Professor Steve Hanke reports, Ghana’s official creditors gathered to discuss restructuring a staggering $5.4 billion in existing loans. But here’s the truly dizzying twist: this restructuring isn’t aimed at breathing room, it’s a prelude to diving deeper into debt, this time with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) holding the life raft. Professor Steve Hanke described Ghana;s current situation as making a deal with the devil which is the result of President Akufo Addo and the IMF loan. This was matheically portrayed by him as AKUFO-ADDO + IMF LOANS = MAKING A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

His tweet read…

Today, Ghana’s official creditors met to discuss the restructuring of $5.4bn in loans in order to secure EVEN MORE loans from the IMF.

AKUFO-ADDO + IMF LOANS

= MAKING A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

This news feels like a cruel déjà vu. We’ve seen this movie before, haven’t we? Developing nations drowning in debt, clinging to IMF lifelines that often come attached to harsh austerity measures, squeezing the very people who can least afford it. And with each “rescue,” the dependency deepens, the noose tightens.

So, the question begs: is the IMF the answer to Ghana’s debt woes, or is it simply perpetuating the problem?

On the surface, restructuring existing loans with the IMF may offer temporary relief. Interest rates might be lowered, repayment schedules adjusted. But here’s the catch: IMF bailouts rarely come free. They often come bundled with conditionalities, forcing cuts to social spending, privatization of crucial resources, and economic policies that prioritize debt repayment over people’s well-being.

In Ghana’s case, the burden of this new dance with the IMF will likely fall on the most vulnerable. Healthcare might take a hit, education budgets might shrink, and essential services might suffer. All while the elite, those least affected by the debt burden, continue to waltz merrily on.

Is there another way? Certainly. Instead of relying on the IMF’s revolving door of debt, Ghana needs to explore domestic solutions. Diversifying the economy, tackling corruption, and promoting sustainable development are just a few steps that can break the cycle of dependence.

Ultimately, the responsibility for charting a new course rests with the Ghanaian people and their leaders. They must demand transparency in debt negotiations, accountability from those responsible for the current crisis, and investments in sectors that empower citizens and build a future free from the shackles of perpetual debt.

Ghana’s story is not unique. It’s a cautionary tale for all developing nations caught in the IMF’s web. While the allure of quick fixes is tempting, we must remember: debt traps are built with good intentions, but paved with broken promises. It’s time to break free from the dance and start building a more just and sustainable future, one where citizens, not creditors, call the shots.

What are your thoughts on Ghana’s debt situation? Share your perspectives, and let’s start a conversation!

Register your key cutting, rubber stamp and seal operations – Ministry of the Interior

Register key cutting rubber stamp and seal operations

The Ministry of the Interior has asked all key cutting, rubber stamp, and seal operators to register or renew their licences with the Ministry of the Interior to avoid sanctions. The key cutting or key duplicating business and its associated rubber stand cutting have been in operation even before independence. However, the Ministry of the Interior has deemed it prudent that these service providers and their activities be regulated.

The registration of key cutter, rubber stamp, and seal operators started in 2023 and is expected to continue until all persons providing the service have duly registered.

READ: All 15 Public Holidays in Ghana for 2024: Know all the dates

According to the Head of Public Affairs of the Ministry, Alhaji Zakari Musah, officials of the Ministry and the Ghana Police Service have started nationwide monitoring and sensitization of private security organisations, locksmiths (key cutting), and rubber stamp and seal operators to streamline their operations and comply with the law.

Alhaji Zakari, who was sensitising the operators during the monitoring exercise in Accra, noted that the Locksmiths (Licencing) Act, 1994, Act 488 states that a person shall not engage in the business of making locks, repairing locks, or cutting keys unless that person is granted a licence by the Minister, and therefore it is an offence to operate without registering or licencing with the Ministry of the Interior.

He said the exercise, which started in 2023, will continue till the end of 2024. He, therefore, asked all players within the sector to abide by the guidelines governing their operations and comply with the directive to avoid sanctions.
