NTC starts teacher license compliance inspection exercise
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has begun the 2024 teacher license compliance inspection nationwide. The council, as part of its mandate as captured in Section 60(1) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020, Act 1023, has started its compliance checks in March 2024. This will be conducted until the end of April 2024.
Act 1023 establishes the National Teaching Council with a mandate to regulate the teaching profession in Ghana.
Per a letter sighted by Ghana Education News from the NTC to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service dated February 22, 2024, the teacher license inspection (Compliance checks) officially started on February 29th.
According to the NTC, the Teacher License Compliance Inspection will take place in all second-cycle public and private SHSs in Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern Central, and Western regions.
The compliance exercise to be carried out by the NTC is one of its five mandates which is to to keep an up-to-date database of teachers.
The five mandates of the NTC are:
1. To license and Register teachers
2. To keep an up-to-date database of teachers
3. To develop and periodically review professional standards and codes of ethics.
4. To conduct teacher Licensure Examination
5. To provide a framework for the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of teachers
All head teachers of second-cycle schools have been directed to support compliance officers who will be posted to their schools to inspect as required by Act 1023.

To ensure a successful inspection, “the council requests all heads of second cycle institutions (both public and private) in the selected regions to provide data on all teachers in their school. The communique furthered that the data must capture both professional and non-professional teachers.
The data must be readily available before the compliance officer(s) arrive at any school in the regions outlined above.

The NTC further directed all head teachers to ensure they hand over the data templates in the format requested to the compliance offices on arrival for the Teacher License Compliance Inspection or email them to the NTC before February 29th at [email protected] or [email protected].
