The 8-time winners of the enviable NSMQ, Presec Legon, have started preparations for the 2024 edition, and so, over 500 students of the school are to justify their inclusion in the 2024 NSMQ as contestants by taking a test. This is the quality assurance practice that Presec takes all its potential candidates through to get the best from them and prepare them for the task.
The Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) administration claims to annually administer exams to choose eligible students to represent the school in the National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ).
The pupils that represent Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) in the yearly national competition go through rigorous selection processes, according to Dzidefo Afram, the coordinator for the 2023 NSMQ.
In what he called a “very competitive” selection procedure, he revealed that the institution holds multiple internal contests to whittle down the pool of potential candidates.
While speaking with Rainbow Radio, Dzidefo Afram revealed that the selection process is rigorous, with as many as 500 potential pupils taking the test at one moment.
Until we reach the desired number of candidates, we eliminate those who we believe are not competitive through the exams. According to him, there are times when they choose five, other times when they choose six from the third term, and still other occasions when they choose all eleven.
Also, interclass competitions are organised by the school to establish who is eligible to participate, according to the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) Coordinator for the National Science and Mathematics Quiz.
In order to narrow the field down to a final team of five or fewer students to represent the school, these procedures are crucial, as the PRESEC NSMQ Coordinator said.
He went on to say that the school discusses the quiz with incoming freshmen and that students from more than 24 different science classes compete in interclass math and science quizzes during the second semester.
He continued by saying that four additional science courses were added to the curriculum for exceptionally bright pupils in the second year.
According to him, the seniors who were already participating in the quiz tutored the Form 1 students to make the interclass competitions competitive.
Students are required to take entrance exams after the competition in order to establish stage eligibility.
