Poor-Quality Free SHS Food Leaves Students Hungry, Parents Upset
A section of parents have opened up about the poor-quality Free SHS food served to students in public second-cycle schools. They described the meals served as bad and nutrient-empty. They made the revelation after JoyNews’ investigative piece on the poor nature of the food served to students and the associated food shortage in schools.
In a video posted by JoyNews titled Empty Plates: The Free SHS Promise: Mawuko Girls SHS students complain about a lack of a balanced diet. Parents interviewed and lamented that the poor-quality Free SHS food served students. They indicated that their children are not served a balanced diet in their schools; hence, the students always return home malnourished and thin.
The JoyNews first broke the poor-quality Free SHS food news through an investigative video, but the managers of education denied it.
One of the parents interviewed in the attached video said every week he has to send food to his child in SHS through a teacher who lives closer to the school. In some instances, parents have to find someone who lives in the school or is closer to cook for the children, the parent added.
“You look at the children when they come back from school and see how lean they have grown. It is like you are punishing them all because of politics,” he stated.
Another parent lamented that when the media brought out the report, the GES, and MoE came out with a piece of counterinformation that they had gone to do their investigations. He called on the GES and MoE to mention the schools where they did their investigations.
He added that, although the students live in boarding houses, parents send money to their children every day to ensure they find good food to eat.
Another father, who sounded worried, added that he sends about GHS100.00 weekly to ensure his child is well-fed. “Every week, I have to send close to GHS100.00 to supplement the food the child is given,” he said.

A father whose ward is in Krobo Girls added that the situation in Krobo Girls was very bad since the children were not fed a balanced diet.
From all indications, there exist not only food supply challenges for SHS but also the continuous feeding of students with junk food prepared daily for students. The continuous attempt by the GES and MoE to pretend all is well does not help matters either.
