Remove 2023 CoE Admission Quota, admit applicant without allowance – EduWatch
The Government through GTEC directives has placed admission quota on all public Colleges of Education which restricts them to admit just a number of qualified applicants for the 2022/2023 academic year which starts in January 2023. The decision by GTEC which was issued as a directive to all colleges has been challenged by Africa Education Watch which is calling for the removal of the 2023 College of Education Admission Quota.
The quota system has negative implications on applicants, since it will lead to qualified applicants been denied admission once each college reaches its allocated threshold. According to the directive from GTEC, the colleges cannot go beyond assigned quotas as teacher trainees allowances and feeding grants will be based on the number.
According to Mr. Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of EduWatch, the move by government is a deliberate tactic aimed at reducing admission into various teacher education institutions to deal with issues of teacher trainee allowance.
He added that the government has invested in Colleges of Education to expand their infrastructure, and it will be improper to impose admission restrictions on students it has produced out of the Free SHS policy.
He called on government to crap the teacher trainees allowance which has remains a wasteful policy to admit students so that it can admit students who are ready to enrol for their CoE degrees without government allowance.
“Please be informed that the allocation cannot be varied and must strictly be adhered to. For the avoidance of doubt, payment of feeding grants and trainees allowance will be guided by these numbers,” GTEC directive indicated.
The quota given to colleges due to the plan to cut down expenses on trainee allowance is as follows.
