Samira Bawumia’s Bag Choices Spark Controversy Amidst NPP ‘s Election Frenzy
In the midst of the escalating political frenzy in the lead-up to the November 4 presidential primaries for NPP in Ghana, an unexpected controversy has emerged, and it’s centred around Second Lady Samira Bawumia and her choice of a designer bag. This development comes as the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate heats up and various factions within the party compete for influence and support.
Kwabena Senkyire, a staunch supporter of Mahamudu Bawumia’s flagbearership campaign, has taken a stand for clean, issue-based campaigns within the NPP. Senkyire’s comments are a response to allegations made against Samira Bawumia by Ralph Agyapong, a member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team. In a recent interview, Ralph Agyapong claimed that Samira Bawumia’s remarks about the importance of retaining power and her dismissal of “bitter and angry” candidates were aimed at his brother, Kennedy Agyapong.
However, Ralph Agyapong took his critique further by suggesting that these comments were fuelled by the Second Lady’s lavish lifestyle, particularly her penchant for designer bags that come with a hefty price tag, often in the thousands of US dollars.
Kwabena Senkyire, never one to remain silent when he believes his party or its members are being unfairly attacked, promptly defended Samira Bawumia from these allegations. He questioned the relevance of such accusations in the political arena, stating, “Have you seen a First or Second Lady who goes around holding a bag? It hasn’t happened before, has it? Have you seen a president holding his own bag before? It doesn’t happen, so let’s stop the propaganda.”

Senkyire stressed that these internal squabbles could potentially harm the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections and cautioned against publicizing every issue within the party. He also echoed Samira’s earlier warning that when power is entrusted to an individual, it must be done so with great care.
“This is an internal fight because if we have to say everything, there would be issues… Hajia Samira said something, and I would like to repeat it, ‘that if you give power to a person, be very careful’,” he said.
As the political climate in Ghana heats up in the run-up to the elections, it remains to be seen how this unusual controversy surrounding Samira Bawumia’s choice of designer accessories will impact the NPP’s race for the presidency. Nonetheless, calls for a cleaner and more issue-focused campaign continue to gain traction. Senkyire’s intervention serves as a timely reminder of the importance of unity within the party and maintaining a focus on the key policy and governance issues that will impact the future of Ghana.
