Self Placement: GES advices students not placed, warns heads not to demand money for admission
Self Placement Wahala as GES advices students not placed, warnes heads not to demand money for admission.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has in its latest press release advised students who have not been placed in any school to follow laid down processes and procedures to get placed in a secondary school or a TVET for their secondary education.
According to the GES, “All students who could not get any of their choices are advised to go through the Self placement formalities and then proceed to the school to go through the admission process.
News making rounds indicates that, some head teachers of secondary , technical and TVET schools are charging parents money for admission. The GES has reacted to this alleged extortion of money in its latest press release on the ongoing 2022 admission and self placement of BECE graduates.
The service cautioned The Head of SHS/TVETs to desist from demanding money which would become a hindrance to the successful placement of a student. It furthered that, admission is free and does not involve the collection or payment of money.
Reports suggest that; some schools are charging parents for admission. A commentator, Amin Abdul Mukit has disclosed that some SHSs in Northern Region are collecting GHC60.00 before issuing admission letters to BECE graduates placed in the school.
In a related development, the Ghana Education Service has disclosed that, first-year students who have gained admission into secondary schools are expected to report to school on 4th April as communicated earlier. Parents students, teachers, and the general public are to note that the re-opening of SHS/T students remains 4th April as indicated on their placement forms.
These were contained in a press release from the GES dated 31st March 2022 and signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, The Head, Public Relations Unit of the GES.
The confirmation of the 4th of April as the reopening date has however been questioned by some parents and students because the self placement is still ongoing, which means some students would not be ready for school by the 4th of April as required. Students and parents who are trying to do the self placement have also complained that there are virtually no schools in some regions.
“As of yesterday, there wasn’t any school in the Eastern, Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, and other closed regions. Meanwhile, there are still some students who are supposed to do self-placement. Please do work on that for us. From Oda-Eastern Region. This was a message from Boahen Collins to the GES on the matter. Another report has indicated that there are no schools with boarding in the self placement portal in nearly all regions and that there are No day school in catchment area for those in AWUTU SENYA EAST, KASOA and its environs.
The GES has responded to the challenge parents who want their wards to pursue technical programmes are going through since they cannot find any such schools in the database of the self placement portal. Reacting to the challenge, the GES has promised that its technical team will be alerted quickly. Thank you for the feedback. The unconfirmed information available to this portal also shows that there are no boarding and day schools available for self placement portal in Ashanti region.
One key concern left by one Nana Akua Sarpong on the GES official page. The message suggested that, the Ghana Education Service has refused to listen to the concerns of parents.
The message read.
Dear Team GES, please if self placement is ongoing why are you still maintaining 4th April as the re-opening for 1st year students. The pressure on parents is too much, ooooooo. You continue to stress these students as well. Please where are we rushing to, especially when we know placement is on going. For once, listen to suffering parents and stressed students yet to gain admission and reschedule the reopening if possible. Thank you
