Teacher’s Laptop: Let’s simplify the issues -Counsellor Daniel Fenyi
Latest Education News Update -Opinions – Teacher’s Laptop: Let’s simplify the issues -Counsellor Daniel Fenyi.
The One Teacher One Laptop policy has created a lot of problems and led to damming revelations after the effort of the Innovative Teachers and All Teachers Alliance Ghana (ATAG) continued probing to ensure teachers are not short-changed. Counsellor Daniel Fenyi has also chared his views by simplifying the demon in the contract.
He writes…
1. So three teachers- a lady and two guys- namely, Phillipa Larsen, Angel Carbonou and King Ali Awudu, presidents for GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT respectively, walked to the Ministry of Education, headed, at the time, by Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) and told him that all the 280,000 teachers in Ghana NEED Laptops to teach, including those who already have one and those in deprived areas with no light, electricity, internet hence had no use for it. Therefore, NAPO should forget about the lack of Curriculum and Textbooks (which were major issues at the time). The laptop was more important.
2. The two guys and the lady told NAPO that all the 280,000 teachers had “AGREED” to pay 509cedis for the laptop. As to how they knew that all teachers had “agreed” remains a mystery till date. NAPO asked them the type of Laptop the teachers needed and the 3 people replied that “oh, as for Ghanaian teachers diieerr, they are “villagers” so forget HP, Toshiba, Apple, Samsung, Acer, etc. just give them some TM1 Laptop bi”.
3. It was an election year. NAPO is a politician. The agenda was populist. So NAPO took advantage and jumped on it. Immediately, impressions were sent out that “Akufo Addo is giving all teachers Laptops”. They said Akufo Addo will pay 70% of the cost. In fact, it was used as a campaign message mpo. Everybody celebrated. Akufo won the elections. Case closed.
4. A year on, teachers are still patiently waiting for the “Akufo Addo” laptops. The Laptops haven’t come. Akufo Addo hasn’t paid his 70% yet. But, ALL the 280,000 teachers have been deducted 509.55cedis from their salaries as payment for a laptop they’ve not even seen yet. Everybody gets angry. Teachers feel cheated. Everybody starts insulting Akufo Addo and NAPO.
5. NAPO bore. Goes to sit on PEACE FM and opens the Pandora’s box that he and Akufo Addo are not to blame for the deductions because it was the 3 people who mooted the idea. In fact, the 3 people even indicated that they had already signed a contract with a Computer company to supply all the 280,000 teachers with Laptops. However, they want the saga to be clothed as a government initiative to have a “national character”.
6. Immediately after NAPO’s revelation, the “CHANGE OF ASSOCIATION” column on the e-payslip has been blocked. No member of GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT can change their association until further notice.
Well, here is my advice to all teachers. I am Counsellor Daniel Fenyi. I am not a member of any of the 5 teacher unions. I am not a beneficiary or victim of any decision taken by them. Therefore, you can trust that my advice is fairly objective.
1. All the 5 teacher unions are USELESS. None of them fights or seeks the teacher’s welfare. Throughout history, No teacher has become a billionaire in Ghana by joining any of the unions. Therefore it’s more logical to join the union with the least monthly deductions. Innovative Teachers Union deducts only 5cedis. It’s the least. I encourage teachers to join.
2. For teachers who have joined GNAT, NAGRAT or CCT due to their loan facilities or welfare fund, there are several banks with equally considerable loan structures and welfare funds. Databank is one of them. Besides, Loan is generally not a sensible reason enough to join an association. How many loans can you take in your entire professional life? And must you even live on loans?
3. Currently, the average GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT pays an average sum of 360cedis yearly in dues. That is about 12 bags of Cement or a truck of sand. Save your money and stop dolling it out to these fraudsters. Leave these unions.
4. This scandal must lead to the outright COLLAPSE of GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT. All teachers in Ghana have at least tertiary education. They should be able to think firmly like graduates. You can’t continue to allow your own colleagues to constantly outsmart you. You went to the same universities and colleges with them. You taught in the same schools with them. You are all paid the same salaries. Why must you allow them to “brainwash” and milk you? When Menzgold defrauded just about 5,000 people, it collapsed. GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT have defrauded 280, 000 graduates, I expect them to collapse too.

5. For now, the “CHANGE OF ASSOCIATION” on teachers’ payslips has been blocked. Anytime it’s unblocked, change it.
But why are teachers so negative and backbiting like this? Anytime a teacher makes some money, a teacher wants to spoil it. Look at how this Christmas money has been made basaaa
6. If the three people- Phillipa, Carbonou and Awudu will gain even 100cedis on each Laptop, calculate (280,000 teachers × 100cedis). That is a whopping 280, 000, 000, 000 (280 Billion Cedis). This money is going into the pockets of only 3 of your own colleagues.
