Per the press release by GES the headmistress has been directed to hand over the administration of the school to the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education pending the final determination of the matter before the management of GES
The press release dated 19th July and was signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Education Service.
What does it mean to interdict a head teacher of a secondary school?
To interdict a head teacher of a secondary school means to temporarily suspend them from their duties pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged wrongdoing. The implications of being interdicted are that the head teacher is not allowed to perform their duties as the head teacher, including but not limited to:
- Making decisions about the school’s administration
- Interacting with students or staff
- Receiving remuneration
The interdiction is a serious step, and it is only taken when there is a credible allegation of wrongdoing. If the investigation finds that the head teacher is guilty of wrongdoing, they may be dismissed from their position. However, if the investigation finds that the head teacher is innocent, they will be reinstated to their position.
The interdiction of a head teacher can have a significant impact on a school. The head teacher is the person responsible for the overall running of the school, and their absence can lead to a lack of leadership and direction. This can be disruptive to students and staff, and it can also affect the school’s academic performance.

However, the interdiction can also be seen as a positive step. It shows that the Ghana Education Service (GES) is committed to upholding high standards of conduct in its schools, and it sends a message to other head teachers that they will be held accountable for their actions.
Here are some examples of the types of wrongdoing that could lead to a head teacher being interdicted:
- Misappropriation of school funds
- Physical or verbal abuse of students or staff
- Sexual misconduct
- Negligence in the performance of their duties
- Collection of unapproved funds
- Other offences that may require their interdiction
Headteachers who have been interdicted, always need to cooperate with the investigation and seek legal advice. They should also be aware of their rights, including the right to appeal the interdiction.
