The Ghana Education Service has disclosed the date for the commencement of the 2023/2024 academic year. This was made public prior to the 3rd term vacation for the 2022/2023 academic year.
When Will the 2023/2024 Academic Year Start In Ghana?
The GES has indicated that 3rd October will be the starting date for the 2023/2024 academic year for primary and junior high schools.
“The reopening date for Basic schools for the first term of the 2023/2024 academic year is 3rd October 2023. Please take note. Thank you.” A public notice from the service in a blog post on its official Facebook page read.
The service is yet to make public the full academic calendar for the year.
It is important for stakeholders to know that the academic calendar for Senior High Schools has also not been announced by the GES.
The service announced earlier this year that, it was going to return pre-tertiary schools to the standard academic year calendar which starts in September each year.
The early release of the academic calendar by the Ghana Education Service (GES) is important for a number of reasons.
It allows parents and students to plan ahead. This is especially important for families who have children in multiple schools or who have to travel to different parts of the country for their children’s education. It also gives parents time to save up for school fees and other expenses.
In addition to that, it allows schools to prepare for the upcoming school year. This includes ordering textbooks and other materials, hiring staff, and making arrangements for repairs and maintenance.

It allows teachers to develop their lesson plans and prepare for the start of the school year. This is especially important for new teachers, who may need more time to prepare for their classes.
The early release of the 2023/2024 Academic calendar will help to ensure that the school year starts on time and that students do not miss out on any instruction.
Overall, the early release of the academic calendar is beneficial for all stakeholders involved in education. It allows parents and students to plan ahead, schools to prepare for the upcoming school year, teachers to develop their lesson plans, and ensures that the school year starts on time.
In addition to the above,
- It helps to reduce stress and anxiety for parents and students.
- It allows students to have a more balanced school life by having more time to participate in extracurricular activities and spend time with their families.
- Furthermore, it gives schools more time to implement new programs and initiatives.
- It allows for better coordination between schools and other organizations, such as transportation providers and extracurricular activity providers.
The GES has been releasing the academic calendar earlier and earlier in recent years, and this trend is likely to continue. This is a positive development, as it benefits all stakeholders involved in education.
