15 million plus SIM to suffer if SIM Re-registration ends tonight
Per the directive of the Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful led Ministry for Communications and Digitalization, the SIM Re-registration ends tonight and the full sanctions out in place will take effect. Already there are at least 9 Ghanaians who have sued the various public institutions for going ahead to block some SIMs in early September. A situation that led to the blocking of both registered and unregistered SIMs.
The request by the plaintiffs to get the court to annul the directive by the Ministry for Communications and Digitalization, and ensure the National Communications Authority (NCA) does not block unregistered SIM cards at the end of September is yet to get the needed legal favour in the ongoing suit.
On Monday, another group, some of whom are constituents of Ningo Prampram filed a writ at the High Court seeking an injunction against the NCA and Attorney General on the exercise.
There are still many Ghanaians who have not received their Ghana card. The Ghana Cards remains the sole document for re-registering SIMs in Ghana and once citizens do not have it, there is no way they can register their SIM card.

If the SIMs yet to be registered are blocked effective midnight, it will amount to a “coup” on SIMs when the government’s institution in charge of the issuing of Ghana Cards has disclosed that it will not be able to issue Ghana Cards to all those who need it before 30th September.
Pressure mounts on the government to scrap the SIM re-registration deadline and allow Ghanaians to freely and without stress go through the re-registration process. It is projected that the SIM re-registration will be extended to January 31st or the deadline will be scraped indefinitely.
The Sector Minister, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has insisted that the date will not be extended and has attracted widespread criticism.
According to the Regulator (NCA), all SIMs which are not registered with the Ghana Card by 30th September 2022 will be deactivated. If this move is carried out, about 15 million plus SIM will suffer for no fault of theirs if the SIM Re-registration ends tonight.
