The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the 2022 BECE timetable however, for the first time, both private candidates thus those who failed BECE for school candidates and are rewriting as well as new candidates from the various schools will be taking the same examination. Other private BECE candidates who can sit for the exam are FIRST TIMERS who are not in regular school but would want to acquire the BECE certificate.
What this means is that WAEC will not hold a special and separate examination for private candidates this year. This move would help WAEC reduce its operational cost as well as save time and effort and the duplication of the same examination for students. Very often the students who sit for the Private examination are few compared to the main BECE.
This interpretation is derived from the unique title given to the examination timetable released by the examining body.
The title reads “BASIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION FOR SCHOOL AND PRIVATE CANDIDATES 2022.
Although WAEC has not made any additional pronouncements, the title means the timetable released is for both School candidates thus first-time candidates from public and private schools while the Private Candidates in the heading implies that candidates who are re-siting the examination.
The 2022 BECE will there ensure that resit candidates and those writing the examination for the first time as school candidates are accessed with the same questions.
A visit to the Private BECE registration portal of WAEC indicates that WAEC has opened the registration portal for resit candidates to register for the examination.
Private BECE candidates’ registration starts on 10th May and ends on 18th June 2022.
The joint 2022 BECE will be held from October 17 to October 21st, 2022, and will see students write Social Studies as the first paper and end the examination with Information & Communication Technology(ICT).
While many are yet to clearly interpret the meaning of the heading, it will be prudent for WAEC to clarify the title of the examination timetable released.
Candidates who sat for the 2021 BECE but did not pass the examination and for which reasons they were not placed or permitted to do the self-placement are expecting WAEC to release a timetable for the private BECE.
If the interpretations given to the title is accurate, WAEC needs to update private BECE candidates on how they can register for the BECE. Such candidates can find all the details on this page (PRIVATE CANDIDATES ONLY). The registration for these candidates ends on 18th June 2022 according to WAEC.
