The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the official date for the 2024 BECE, but do you know the 2024 BECE registration process and fees?
What is the 2024 BECE date?
According to the official release by WAEC, the BECE will start on July 8th, 2024, and end on July 12th, 2024. The examination will be written over five days.
Both schools (public and private), as well as private candidates (those writing but not registered by schools), will be taking the examination. Often, the private BECE candidates are those who failed the previous examination.
The 2024 BECE will be the first to be administered as far as the new curriculum is concerned.
Schools, teachers, and parents will be expected to work hand in hand to ensure their candidates are ready for the examination.
The 2024 BECE date did not, however, come with the timetable for the examination. It is expected that WAEC will release the timetable soon to ensure stakeholders are aware of the subjects they will be writing on each day.
What is the 2024 BECE Registration Fee?
Often, all candidates registered by public schools do not pay any fee to WAEC; however, such schools will have to charge some amount to cover administrative costs.
Some of the costs incurred that the government does not finance for public schools include the transportation cost of registration details to exam units, the cost of the internet for registering students, printing costs, passport pictures, and their related costs, among others.
However, students who take the examination as candidates from private schools and private candidates registering independently will incur the above cost and the full cost of the BECE since the government does not subsidize the cost of the exam for them.
At the time of this publication, WAEC had not released the examination registration fees
What is the BECE registration process and phases?
There are three stages, or phases, that schools go through to register BECE candidates for the examination each year.
Phase 1: Schools are required to capture the biodata of students. The data collected includes the names of candidates, age, date of birth, if they have any disabilities, etc. Other information gathered includes the subjects they will be writing about.
Schools are also to take and upload passport pictures of their candidates. Once the final data is generated for a school, the registration portal generates each student’s final index number for the examination.
All the above are sent to WAEC via the online registration portal, and the hard copies plus the same data are on a CD.
These details are to be forwarded to WAEC through the various examination units in each district.
Phase 2: The selection of schools, programmes, and accommodation types by candidates. This has been done in recent times after the examination has been conducted. In 2023, BECE candidates selected up to 11 schools, yet close to 200,000 students missed all their 11 school choices.
Candidates who will be registering as private candidates for the 2024 BECE will have to complete their registration online on not with the school. WAEC will make their registration procedure available in due time
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Parents should be interested in the registration process and ensure their wards submit the right names in the right order, as will be required by the school.
- Ensure the names are correctly spelled because it is not easy to change them once a school submits its details to WAEC. Often, such changes can only be made at the SHS level.
- Ensure the gender of the candidate is written correctly.
- Parents should keep copies of the final biodata they send to the school so that, in case an error is detected, they can use their copy as a verification document.
We hope this post on the 2024 BECE date and the 2024 BECE process has been very useful.
