NIA Resumes Ghana Card Registration for Children (6–14 Years)

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has officially announced the resumption of the Ghana Card registration exercise for children within the age bracket of 6 to 14 years. This exercise is set to commence next month, May 2026.

Parents are to ensure that they have valid birth certificates for their children from the Birth and Death Registration Office before they visit any registration centre for the service. Where this is not readily available, the parent(s) of the minor must be present at the registration centre with the child(ren) to go through the process. A passport will also be valid, while two social welfare officers will be needed in other instances where the child is under the care of such officers.

According to the official notice released by the authority, this phase of the registration drive is specifically targeted at residents in the Volta and Oti Regions. Parents and guardians within these two regions are encouraged to prepare the necessary documentation to ensure a smooth registration process.

Important Registration Requirements

To facilitate a successful registration, the NIA has outlined specific requirements. Applicants must provide at least one of the following forms of identification or adhere to the verification process:

• Original Birth Certificate
• Valid Ghanaian Passport
• Presence of Parent or Relative (to accompany the child)
• Presence of a Legal Guardian
• Two Social Welfare Officers (applicable in specific cases where they are required to vouch for the child’s identity)

Important Notice for Other Regions

The NIA wishes to inform the general public that this particular registration window is currently limited to the Volta and Oti Regions. Information regarding the schedule and commencement dates for registration in other regions across the country will be communicated in due course.

Parents and guardians are advised to stay tuned to official channels for updates to ensure they do not miss the exercise when it arrives in their respective areas.

According to the NIA’s registration statistics as of 21st April 2026, a total of 19,440,513 Ghanaians have been enrolled. A total of 18,737,670 cards have been printed and issued.
