Organized Labour Call Off Strike After Govt Agreed On 15% COLA

Organized Labour Call Off Strike After Govt Agreed On 15% COLA

The government of Ghana through the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission at a crunch emergency negotiation with organized labour has agreed to pay 15% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) instead of the 20% put forth by the various labour unions.

Four Pre-Tertiary teacher education unions (GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT-GH, and TEWU) started the strike on 4th July as they laid down their tools. Other unions joined, and efforts to get the unions to call off the strike at the 12th July negotiation meeting failed.

The leadership of the teacher unions speaking to the media after the emergency negotiation meeting called on all teaching and non-teaching staff of the education sector to return to work effective today 14th July 2022.

Per the agreement reached between organized labour and the government, the 15% agreed COLA will take effect on 1st July 2022.

The 15% COLA will be paid based on the base pay of public sector workers.

The news that Organized Labour have called off the COLA strike after the parties agreed to a compromised 15% COLA means effective 15th July, teachers and non-teaching staff will all re reporting to school to continue their work in high spirit.

Parents who had been worried about the delayed move by the government to respond positively to the request of striking teachers would also be happy knowing that, their wards who have been either home since 4th July or have been loitering about due to the strike will not go back to school.

In a related development, the government is expediting action to ensure the food shortage being experienced by Free Senior High Schools across the country are also dealt with in record time.
