Gospel Singer Nacee Challenges FDA Ban on Celebrity Alcohol Endorsement
In a recent episode of United Showbiz on Saturday, November 18, 2023, Ghanaian gospel artist Nacee voiced his opposition to the FDA ban on celebrities Alcohol endorsement. Nacee, who is not only a musician but also a music producer, questioned the rationale behind allowing foreign individuals to promote such products while imposing restrictions on their Ghanaian counterparts.
Expressing his concerns, Nacee argued that the ban on celebrities might prove ineffective in the long run, emphasizing that even lesser-known individuals, if given the opportunity to advertise, could rise to celebrity status with continued promotion. Drawing a parallel with the rise of Michael Power through Guinness commercials, Nacee stated, “If we feature an ordinary person in ads and keep promoting the said ads, they will rise to become popular in a couple of months so much that they may not be able to buy food from the roadside.”

Highlighting what he sees as a discriminatory aspect of the ban, Nacee remarked, “It is surprising that we won’t let our local celebs advertise but our foreign counterparts are allowed to. It is good to regulate whatever we do, but it should not be discriminatory. We love foreigners more than ourselves… it doesn’t make sense. Let’s stop starving ourselves while giving foreigners the juicy deals.”

The FDA imposed the ban in 2015, citing adherence to a World Health Organization policy aimed at safeguarding children and deterring them from being enticed into alcoholism.

Despite facing criticism and appeals for reconsideration, Kofi Essel, the Head of the Industry Support Services Department at the FDA, remained firm in an interview, emphasizing the potential influence of well-known figures on followers not legally permitted to possess or use alcohol.
In response to Essel’s stance, Nacee and other critics argue for a more inclusive and less discriminatory approach, suggesting that regulations should apply uniformly to both local and foreign influencers. The debate over the FDA’s ban on celebrity alcohol endorsements continues, with stakeholders on both sides expressing their perspectives on the matter.
