The central government has released an amount of GHC50 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the just-ended 2024 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination and ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School.

The Ministry of Education in a statement said the disbursement reaffirms the government’s commitment to fulfilling the financial obligations to WAEC and ensuring that the Council’s operations continue without interruption.

“The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce the release of Fifty million (GHC 50 million) to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to support the conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

“We wish to reassure all stakeholders, especially students, parents, guardians, and the general public, of our dedication to sustaining an environment that fosters seamless, efficient, and high-quality education for all Ghanaian students,” it noted.

The government in June 2024 ahead of the conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination, paid the not-for-profit-making organization an amount of GHC47 million for the conduct of the BECE, out of the GHC95.83 million debt.

A total of 460,611 candidates comprising 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls from 1,003 Senior High Schools across the country will participate in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School.

Ongoing at 1,000 centres across the country, the management of the West African Examinations Council has said the number of students writing this year’s WASSCE is 2.66% higher than the 2023 entry figure of 448,674.
