Guru begins grounds work for University of Ghana’s SRC president bid

Rapper Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known professionally as Guru, has officially launched his campaign for the president bid of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Ghana.
With a vibrant and engaging social media post, Guru extended a warm welcome to the returning students, expressing his excitement and calling for a united effort to improve the student body’s experience.
In a message full of enthusiasm, Guru wrote, “Dear Legonites, I’m thrilled to have you back in school. Let’s kick off this semester with positivity and enthusiasm! MARADONA YEBOAH ADJEI (GURU -NKZ) UGSRC PRESIDENT HOPEFUL’24. #Building the SRC with Everyone for everyone #Let’s all get involved.” His campaign slogan, “Building the SRC with Everyone for Everyone,” reflects his commitment to inclusivity and collaboration among students.
Guru’s decision to run for SRC President didn’t come as a surprise to many who have followed his career and philanthropic efforts.
Several weeks prior to his campaign announcement, during an appearance on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, Guru shared his longstanding dream not only to study at the University of Ghana but also to contribute significantly to its community.
He revealed that maintaining high academic standards was a priority for him since good grades are essential for eligibility to run for SRC positions.

Beyond academics, Guru has actively engaged with the SRC and the student community in the past.
He recounted his involvement in sponsoring and organizing key university events, such as the Evandi Hall Week.
His efforts to bring notable artists like Mr Drew to campus events have significantly boosted student engagement and morale.
Guru also mentioned preparing proposals for other major events, although some could not be realized due to logistical challenges.
Guru’s bid for the SRC presidency is inspired by a genuine desire to give back to the university community.
His campaign promises to focus on enhancing the quality of student life, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring that the voices of all students are heard and considered in the SRC’s decisions.
The rapper’s foray into university politics follows a growing trend of artists engaging in educational institution governance.
For instance, in 2022, Reggae/Dancehall artist Samini successfully ran for the SRC presidency at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and was sworn in later that year.
Guru’s move into student politics underscores a broader shift towards artists taking up leadership roles beyond their entertainment careers, seeking to influence positive changes in various sectors, including education.
This trend not only enriches their personal development but also sets a precedent for public figures to use their influence for societal benefits.
As Guru continues his campaign, his blend of celebrity influence and genuine commitment to student welfare could significantly shape his chances of success in the upcoming elections.
The university community is keenly watching as one of their own takes on a new challenge, potentially transforming the SRC and setting new standards for student leadership and engagement.
