Iddrisu Mariam Aziz, a level 200 University of Ghana student, has been interpreting sign language since she was a teenager and is now considered an expert in the field.
Since the age of 14, Aziz has worked for a variety of reputable organizations and individuals, including interpreting for former President John Dramani Mahama on his campaign tours.
Aziz revealed to Ghanaeducation.org that she was born into the practice because both of her parents are deaf, and she had to be the liaison between them and the general public from a young age.
She became a liaison for the Deaf Association in addition to her role as a liaison for her parents, traveling with them as an interpreter.
She met Hon Seidu Maha, the Bono regional organizer of the NDC office in Sunyani, and, later, former President John Dramani Mahama, who was impressed by her dedication to serving the deaf community, as a result of her involvement.
This led to her participation in the NDC’s campaign tour as a sign language interpreter, which marked the official start of her journey in that role at the age of 14.
“Aside from the financial benefits, I will entreat people to take it upon themselves to learn the basics of sign language because the mouth is not the only medium to communicate but hands too is another medium. With this understanding, the stereotype around hearing-impaired people will stop,” she stated.
