Ofori-Atta pleads with Minority to approve 2024 budget
In a bid to avoid a repeat of past challenges, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has appealed to the Minority to support and approve the 2024 budget. The Minister expressed concerns over a potential reoccurrence of resistance, reminiscent of the controversy surrounding the Electronic Levy (E-levy) three years ago.
The E-levy dispute led to the rejection of the 2021 budget by the house. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin initially presided over the rejection, but his first deputy, Joseph Osei-Owusu, later overturned the decision in the absence of the speaker.
During the opening ceremony of the Post Budget Workshop in Parliament, Ofori-Atta addressed Members of Parliament (MPs), emphasizing the importance of unity in passing crucial measures. The Finance Minister revealed that the government aims to raise 0.9% of GDP through revenue bills to be presented for parliamentary approval.

“Mr. Speaker, we are therefore calling on you to support us once again, like we have done in the past, to pass the proposed measures in the 2024 budget and on time,” Ofori-Atta pleaded. He urged MPs to recognize the current circumstances and work collectively for the benefit of the nation.
“Mr. Speaker, there is a time and season to tear and a time to mend, there is a time for war, a time for peace and a time to scatter and a time to gather. Mr. Speaker, this is the time to gather, this is the time to mend and also a time for peace,” the Finance Minister stressed.

In response, Speaker Alban Bagbin urged MPs to consider public sentiments in their deliberations, highlighting the critical nature of this year’s budget. He emphasized the need for thorough discussion, stating, “This budget is a critical budget, and I want us to have time because leadership has discussed with me, and we have enough time to deliberate on the budget.”
As the nation awaits the parliamentary decision on the 2024 budget, the plea for unity and timely approval underscores the significance of a cooperative and thoughtful approach in addressing the country’s fiscal challenges.
