Dr Bawumia pledges free tertiary education scholarships for PWDs

In the latest Ghana Education News in relation to Dr. Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the NPP has pledged to initiate scholarships that would provide free tertiary education to persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This was said by Bawumia during a meet up with clergy members of Sehwi-Wiawso, a town in the western North region of Ghana.

The NPP Flagbearer enlightened that this scholarship Scheme would be fully funded by some allocation made to the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the Ghana Education Trust Fund AKA GETFUND.

Bawumia’s Tertiary Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities would cover costs such as tuition and accomodations.

“We are already providing scholarships to a wide array of individuals, but it is essential to dedicate a portion of these funds specifically to assist PWDs in accessing higher education,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Outside the conversation around intentions for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Bawumia made known to the public that he is the Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, this he believes, is one of the drivers for this initiative.

The current Vice President also shared his insights on some of the works he has done to help Persons with Disabilities in his administration. He believes, Persons with Disabilities are vulnerable People and should be treated a Priority.

In other related news, the Ghana Education Service ( GES ) has also taken an initiative to enhance academic opportunities for Persons with Disabilities at the Basic Level.

While on Peace’s FM’s “kokrokoo” show, Director General of GES Prof. kwasi Opoku Amankwa detailed government’s plan to develop policies that would help solve problems of Persons with Disabilities and Special Needs at the basic level of education up to secondary schools.

According to the GES Director General, this plan is a developmental strategy of inclusion which ensures no student, regardless of their challenges, be it physical or intellectual, be left out of education.

“The majority of special needs schools are at the basic level, but integrating them into the Free SHS policy acknowledges the extra resources and specialized attention required for these students,” he emphasized.

The Ghanaian government, through the Ghan Education Service, is set to give out further information about its intentions to be inclusive in education by initiating policies that would help Persons with Disabilities who are pursuing education.

These policies reflect a growing recognition of the importance of education in empowering individuals and shaping an inclusive society.

Known affectionately as Maa Lydia, she used the occasion of her annual “Easter Feast and Games” to embolden students to keep their faith in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, especially amidst the current economic challenges faced by the nation.

One Student One Tablet: Vote buying and misplaced education project by Bawumia

The ruling NPP government has launched the much anticipated one student one tablet innovative which targets SHS students. However, the initiative looks more like an attempt to use these devices to coerce SHS students most of who are of voting age to vote of the NPP in the December 2024 elections.

In all nearly 1.5 million students will be in SHS at the time of the election hence the sharing of these tablets from the resources of the state could influence these students into voting in a certain way.

Is the NPP using this one student one tablet innovative to target at least 1 million votes because they believe students at this level can easily be bought with such freebies?

In 2016, the NPP trumpeted the Free SHS for which reason many voted for Candidates Nana Addo in that elections.

The vice president Dr Bawumia has also toned a similar path with the one student one laptop project launched today under the Smart Schools Project.

The project could also be an avenue to corruption related practices if ethical considerations and care is not taken.

The decision to make these tablets free is also questionable at a time government has failed to consider the remuneration needs of teachers which compelled them to embark on a strike action.

Our schools we are converting into smart learning centres are saddled with lack of furniture, poor food and nutrition for students who are served junk meals daily.

One would have thought government with tackle the basic challenges confronting our schools to lay solid foundations for growth.

Our basic schools have been neglected leading to their slow development and compounded problems.

As a country, we have continued to exhibit high levels of ignorance on the need to develop out basic education and related infrastructures using which we shall develop smart schools.

Do our schools currently have the needed capacity in terms of electricity supply to help students power or charge these tablets on campus.

By introducing this free tablets for schools are were saying our students are at liberty to bring computers , laptops, mobile devices and related gadgets to school contrary to the GES policy on the use of such gadgets in schools?

While gradually introducing electronic gadgets into schools is great, the government would have dine this nation a lot of good by first introducing smart boards in all second cycle schools for effective teaching and learning.

This would drive IT into the core of teachers work. The success of this will inform on what needs to be done for students in the area of one student one tablet.
With the new approach, teachers will be teaching with their black boards abd chalk, marker and white boards whiles their students use tablets.

Our attempt to innovate must be strategic, well thought of to ensure they achieve the needed results.

What happens if a student’s tablet is stolen or gets damaged? If he or does not get a replacement, how can he or she study since all educational materials he needs will be on it.

What happens if there is no power for students to charge their tablets, how will they be able to study with all their books loaded onto the tablet?

Why didn’t government consider a wireless library where books abd materials can be loaded on it.
It ones and students can use their mobile devices to access these books without the Internet. This option is cheaper considering the cost of one tablet which is between ghs2000 and ghs3000.00 per student.

This One Student One Table initiative looks more of an early vote buying strategy and a misplaced education project by Bawumia. For sure , they will use this to convince parents and students of voting age to vote for the NPP.

Bawumia appoints Former Oti Minister, Joshua Makubu, as campaign Coordinator for PWDs, Special Needs

In a significant move aimed at reinforcing the inclusion and empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and those with special needs within the political landscape of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appointed Joshua Makubu, the former Oti Minister, as his campaign coordinator for these critical demographic groups.

Joshua Makubu, known for his advocacy and work with PWDs, is tasked with the crucial role of mobilizing support and rallying behind Dr. Bawumia’s vision, one that promises to foster an inclusive society where the talents and energies of all Ghanaians, irrespective of their physical abilities, are harnessed for national development.

The announcement made on Monday, March 11, 2024, by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications and spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, underscores the flagbearer’s longstanding commitment to the welfare and inclusion of PWDs and individuals with special needs in Ghana.

Highlighting some of the significant strides made under Dr. Bawumia’s advocacy, Aboagye detailed the increase in the percentage allocation for PWDs under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) from 2% to 3%.

Additionally, the creation of a Photo Album of Persons with Disability across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) has enhanced the efficiency and accountability in the disbursement of funds, catering to the specific needs of PWDs.

The impactful reach of these initiatives is evident in the substantial disbursement of GHc331,185,775.86 to PWDs across the 261 MMDAs since 2017, benefiting 59,040 individuals.

This includes financial support for start-up capital to 52,995 PWDs and the provision of start-up tools and kits to 6,045 individuals, further empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the economy.

The commitment to economic support for PWDs, described as unparalleled in the history of Ghana’s 4th republic, is a testament to the government’s dedication to creating sustainable livelihoods for citizens with special needs.

As the 2025 elections draw near, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, under the coordination of Joshua Makubu, aims to continue and enhance these efforts.

Key proposals include the recruitment of 1,000 special education teachers, retraining for teachers on accommodating special needs students, and the training of more speech and language therapists, as well as occupational and behavioural therapists.

These initiatives are not just about support but about integrating PWDs fully into the fabric of Ghanaian society, ensuring they have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to the nation’s development.
