Teacher unions warn of nationwide STRIKE by Sept

Teacher unions warn of nationwide STRIKE by September is an indication that the government is not out of the woods yet after the 4% increase in pay for public sector workers was announced. There are other pressing issues: No test books for teachers and learners, other teaching and learning aids as well as outstanding training for JHS teachers on the new curriculum.
Teacher unions have there warned of possible strike action if the government does not meet their demands.
The three unions (GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH) have therefore given the government up to the end of September 2021 to address teachers’ issues in Ghana or in the country.
Failure on the part of the government will lead to nationwide strike action by teachers.
In a statement copied to the press, the unions (GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH) stated that despite the government’s progress in improving access to education for all, the government has failed to provide teachers and pupils with the needed modern teaching and learning aids.
“There are no textbooks, the school environment is not conducive for learning, classes are overcrowded, the payment of capitation grant and administrative resources are delayed, among others,” the unions stated in the joint release.
In the said letter, they further called the Ghana Education Service to shelve its decision not to consider teachers working in the District and Regional Education Offices as Heads and Assistant Heads of Schools.
“The ramifications of a mass and nationwide transfer singling out one group of teachers is not only discriminatory but also wrong. We call on Ghana Education Service (GES) to suspend the action,” the union stated in the joint statement.

To this end, the unions have called on the Ghana Education Service to suspend the signing of the performance contracts until it has been discussed with the Unions.
“We the Teacher Unions are hereby serving notice that if by the close of September 2021, all these issues are not resolved in full by the employer, then we will have no option than to advise ourselves,” the education unions stated.
