WAEC breaks for Christmas, 2024 WASSCE result not near release
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has concluded its activities for the year following the announcement of its break for the 2024 Christmas festivities. WAEC’s Christmas break begins on 20th December, and the council will officially resume work on 6th January 2025.
This means that the possibility of WAEC releasing the 2024 WASSCE results for school candidates before January 7th, 2025, is highly unlikely.
According to the council, its offices will reopen for business on January 6, 2025. As a result, universities and other tertiary institutions in Ghana will be unable to commence their Semester 1 academic activities on the initially proposed reopening date of 4th January 2025 due to the delayed release of the WASSCE results.
All WASSCE candidates who applied for admission and have their status pending will also be unable to complete their admission processes until the results are released.

This marks the first time in WAEC’s history that WASSCE results have not been released in the same year the examination was administered to school candidates. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, WAEC typically released results in under 70 days after the last paper. In some instances during the pre-COVID era, results were released in less than 50 days when students were paying for their WASSCE exams directly.
WAEC’s inability to complete post-exam processes and release the results is largely due to the government’s failure to pay its debts to the council. These debts arose because the government absorbed the entire WASSCE exam registration fee for all students in public senior high schools but failed to pay WAEC, leaving the council financially constrained and unable to fund its operations.
