Zelenskyy Takes Swift Action: Sacks Military Medical Chief
In a decisive move to address the pressing need for reform in Ukraine’s military medical system, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dismissal of Military Medical Chief Major-General Tetiana Ostashchenko, the commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces. The president, in his nightly video address on Sunday, emphasized the urgency of implementing rapid changes to enhance the support and care for Ukrainian soldiers.
Zelenskyy outlined a comprehensive agenda for the reform, encompassing improvements in various areas such as the development of better tourniquets, digitalization of medical processes, and enhanced communication. The president stressed the importance of achieving a “fundamentally new level of medical support” for the country’s military personnel.

The decision to replace Ostashchenko was framed as a crucial step toward achieving these objectives. Major-General Anatoliy Kazmirchuk, the head of a military clinic in Kyiv, has been appointed as Ostashchenko’s successor.
President Zelenskyy, in a meeting with Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, set forth the priorities for the reform and emphasized the need for swift action. Umerov acknowledged the change and outlined his priorities, including digitalization, tactical medicine, and the rotation of service members.
The context of this move coincided with an ongoing debate about the 20-month-old war against Russia, with questions arising about the speed of a counteroffensive in the east and south of Ukraine. President Zelenskyy denied any indication of the conflict entering a stalemate, emphasizing that the war was entering a new stage of attrition. He underscored the importance of advanced technology to counter the Russian military.
As Ukraine reports advances in recapturing occupied areas, Zelenskyy has consistently called on Western partners, particularly the United States, to maintain military support. The dismissal of the military medical chief aligns with Zelenskyy’s commitment to ensuring the well-being and effectiveness of Ukraine’s armed forces amid the evolving dynamics of the conflict.
