After John Mahama called for her to be replaced, the 2020 running mate of the National Democratic Congress NDC, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, is facing intense pressure to keep her position.
Following the conclusion of the party primaries that chose John Mahama as the NDC flagbearer, a number of names are reportedly emerging.
This comes in response to claims that John Mahama’s running mate for 2020 won’t significantly improve the party’s chances in the general election.
According to insiders who wish to remain anonymous, “new names have come up for consideration but not seriously because the focus was on getting John Mahama elected with a large majority. Now that has passed, but it’s too soon.
Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, a dependable senior advisor to John Mahama and a former deputy chief of staff, is one of the well-known names that may receive serious consideration. She is rumored to have close relationships with networks that Mahama in 2024 could use, both inside and outside the party.
Patrick Awuah, the founder of Ashesi University, who reportedly rejected Mahama’s offers to be his running mate in 2020 along with the late Finance Minister Kwesi Botchwey, might also be taken into consideration once more in the hopes that he changes his mind.
Others include minority leader Cassiel Ato Forson, an economist, MP, and former deputy finance minister; Kwame Awuah-Darko, a former managing director of BOST and TOR who was considered as the party’s 2020 running mate; Joseph Siaw Agyapong, group CEO of Jospong; Opong Fosu, an authority on local government; and Eric Opoku, a powerful MP who could win the middle and southern regions of Ghana for the NDC.
