Check Out The 8 SHS In Ghana To Produce The Best WASSCE Candidates Since 2006
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Distinction award is a programme instituted to reward best performing WASSCE candidates each year. So far, only eight schools in Ghana have produced the best WASSCE candidates since 2006.
Let’s take a look at the names of the senior high schools that have produced the best WASSCE(school candidates).
1. Wesley Girls.
Wesley Girls SHS has produced a total of seven best students in the WASSCE since 2006. It was the first school to win the award in 2006. Let’s look at the names of the winners from Wesley Girls.

- 2011. Sakyi Ann Abena Antwiwaa.
- 2012. Pah-Kordieh Yvette.
- 2013. Mannoh Ivy Ama.

2. St James Seminary SHS
St James Seminary SHS is the current holder of the award. The school produced the best WASSCE candidates in the 2022 WASSCE. The school first won this award in 2016. It was won by Kyere Pius. Alex Opoku from the same school won the award for best 2022 WASSCE candidate.

3. Legon Presec
This is undoubtedly the best SHS in Ghana. It has also produced two best WASSCE candidates. The school first won it in the year 2009. It was won by Adu Poku Frank. The school’s recent win was in 2021 and it was won by 2021
Asante Kwame Brako.

The Distinction Awards were instituted by the WAEC Endowment Fund. One of the objects of the Fund is the provision of prizes for awards to candidates who distinguish themselves in the Council’s national and international examinations. The Ceremony is specially designed to publicly acknowledge the exceptional performance of candidates in the WASSCE for School Candidates.

About Alex Opoku Manu, Best 2022 WASSCE Candidate
Alex Opoku Manu was been crowned the overall best candidate for the 2022 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination(WASSCE). Alex is a product of St. James Seminary. He had the best grade and score in the 2022 WASSCE.
He was given an amount of ¢30,000 and a laptop from Zenith Bank. He also received a desktop computer. WAEC also gave him ¢1,200 dollars from the WAEC endowment fund.
Alex Opoku was also crowned the best Science student of the year and received $400 from WAEC and another cash prize of ¢10,000. Alex represented his school in the 2022 National Science and Maths Quiz competition and won the Brong Ahafo Zonal competition. They reached the semi finals of the competition. He is currently at KNUST studying Human Biology(Medicine)
