Easy Guide: How To Calculate GPA In Ghana

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a way to measure how well students do in college. It is a single number that shows how well a student did in all of his or her classes.
Most GPAs in Ghana are on a scale from 1.0 to 4.0, and they are calculated every semester. GPA is used in the same way that grades are used to judge how well a student did in a course: to measure how well a student did in their entire degree program.
Students are put into different classes based on their grades: first class, second class (both lower class and upper class), third class, and pass.
Before we can figure out a student’s GPA, we need to know what certain terms mean.
1. Cumulative Credits Taken (CCT): This is the total number of credit hours taken in a course. If a student takes six classes at three credit hours each during a semester, CCT will equal 18.
2. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): This is the total number of grade points from level 100 to level 400 divided by the total number of credit hours.
3. CCP: This is the total number of credit hours a student has earned in a course. This means that if a student got grades of E and F, those grades don’t count toward the CCP because they are for courses that the student failed.
4. Final Grade Point Average (FGPA): The student’s class of degree will depend on this number.
Now let’s figure out how to do the math.
Here are the steps you need to take to figure out your GPA in Ghana;
Assuming this is a University of Ghana student’s transcript.
COURSE CREDIT GRADE GPT
1 3 B+ 10.5
2 2 A 8
3 2 B+ 7
4 3 A 12
5 3 A 12
6 3 C 6
GPA, therefore, would be equal to the total GPT divided by the total credit hours
GPA=55.5/16
= 3.46
The final Grade Point Average is when all the grades’ GPAs are added up. For every course a student had to retake, the number of times it was taken is counted.
If a student retakes a course three times and passes on the third try, all of their credits and GPTs will be taken into account.
All the levels have the same weighting, which is 1:1:2:2. This means that level 100 has a weight of 1, level 200 has a weight of 1, level 300 has a weight of 2, and level 400 also has a weight of 2.
Assuming the GPA for a student at the various levels are as follows:
Level 100……..3.46
Level 200……..3.50
Level 300……..2.70
Level 400……..3.20
The FGPA of the student will be calculated as follows:
Level 100= 3.46×1/6
=0.58
Level 200=3.50×1/6
=0.58
Level 300=2.70×2/6
=0.90
Level 400=3.20×2/6
=1.07
FGPA there would be:
FGPA=0.58+0.58+0.90+1.07
=3.13
This means that the student would be graduating with a second-class degree(upper division).
Below is the degree classification of the University of Ghana
First-class……..3.60-4.00
Second class (upper)……3.00-3.59
Second class (lower)…..2.00-2.99
Third class………………1.50-1.99
Pass……………………….1.00-1.49
Fail (no award)…………0.00-0.99
With the information provided, it should be straightforward to calculate your GPA independently.
