GES Director-general Visits Bereaved Families Of Drowned Pupils Of Atigagorme In The Sene East District.
The Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, visited the bereaved families of the eight (8) pupils who met their untimely death while crossing from Atigagorme to attend school at Wayokope in the Sene East District in the Bono East Region.
During his visit, he donated hundred (100) life jackets and learning materials to the community.
After inspecting a piece of land donated by the community to be used for the construction of a school, Dr Nkansah disclosed that the Government will construct a school in the island community within the shortest possible time. However, he explained that the donation of the life jackets was an interim safety and security measure for the school children and teachers.
Dr Nkansah also comforted the twelve (12) surviving pupils who were among the twenty (20) children who were on the boat when the incident occurred and assured them of the continuous support of GES to ensure they are safe and secure as they continue to pursue their studies.
Background
Eight school children from the Atikagome community in the Sene East District in the Bono East Region died when a boat which was transporting them to school capsised on the Volta Lake on Tuesday (January 24, 2023).
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed the incident to Graphic Online.

The deceased were among 20 school children in the boat who were travelling from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located. 12 pupils managed to swim to safety.
According to NADMO, the deceased are made up of five boys and three girls between the ages of five and 12.
The Sene East District Director of NADMO, Ibrahim Wudonyim, told Graphic Online that before they got to the accident scene, some community members and Marine Police had managed to retrieve all the eight bodies from the Lake.
He explained that the incident happened around 7am on Tuesday and that boat capsized midway.
The bodies have been sent to Atikagome, a fishing community.
The community has been thrown into mourning, shock and fear as a result of the incident.
