Ghana Wins All Three Awards At WAEC Excellence Awards

Ghana celebrated a remarkable achievement after it won all three top awards at the WAEC International Excellence Awards, recognizing exceptional performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The prestigious awards ceremony, held during this year’s Council Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, witnessed an all-boys podium, highlighting the outstanding academic prowess of Ghanaian students.
St. James Seminary emerged as the frontrunner, securing two of the highest accolades among the 2,327,342 candidates from the five-member council.
Leonard Kofi Marton, a former student of St. James Seminary Senior High School (SHS), who is now pursuing Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, clinched the overall winner title with an impressive score of 623.5512. Following closely, Dzandu Selorm, a former Labone SHS student and current medical student at KNUST, secured the second position with a score of 623.1882. Additionally, Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, also a former student of St. James Seminary SHS and currently attending Ashesi University, claimed the third spot with a score of 622.4438.

To qualify for the Excellent Award, candidates must attain an A1 grade in at least eight subjects, including core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, and Integrated Science.
Commending the exceptional achievement, Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, extended his congratulations to the awardees for elevating Ghana’s stature on the global academic platform. He attributed the success to the continuous dedication and sacrifices of Ghanaian teachers and school management, emphasizing the importance of their role in nurturing such exemplary talents.
In addressing the prevalent issue of examination malpractice, Professor Ato Essuman, Chairman of the Council, reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to combatting the menace, urging member countries and governments to support their efforts in upholding the integrity of the examination system.
Expressing his gratitude, Leonard Kofi Marton, the overall winner, acknowledged the support of the government, Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Education, WAEC, and his family in his academic journey, underscoring the collective effort that contributed to their success.
