Heartless Exploitation: Kantamanto Fire Victims Allegedly Charged GHS 1000 for By GNFS Staff Fire Reports
A worried anonymous staff member of a bank has reported to the celebrated journalist Nana Aba Anamoah that some heartless Ghana Fire Service officials are allegedly charging Kantamato traders whose wares and shops got burnt a whopping illegal GHS1000 per head for a fire report, which is needed as evidence to banks that granted the traders loans for trade.
The message sent to Nana Aba Anamoah, which she also shared on her X account, has since gone viral.
The message sent to Nana Aba Anamoah read as follows:
Good morning, Aunty Nanaba,
The fire that burnt the Kantamanto Market, I work in a financial institution, and most of these market men and women have secured loans. They are required to bring a fire service report and the fire service officers are charging GHS1000 cedis per person before they issue a report. Some clients have already paid GHS500.00 before they received their report. And ideally the even issue for a group of people, they include their names on one letter but the dire service at Tudu has refused to even issue it for them in groups. Nanaba this is not fair to these people who have lost their livelihood.
At the time of this publication, Ghana Education News had not sighted any response from the leadership of the Ghana National Service. Ghanaians have reacted to the news and called out the leadership of the GNFS and the John Mahama government to ensure the Ghana police investigates the allegations and brings to book all officers of the GNFS who are engaged in the exploitation for their personal gains.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), prior to this allegation, organised a press conference to debunk allegations that it used water mixed with fuel to attempt to put out the Kantamato fire, which destroyed the stocks and other valuables for traders who worked at the market.
